Can't map a drive after switching from McAfee to Notron

Greetings,

I just installed Norton Internet Security 21.1.0.18 on an old PC running Windows XP SP3.  It used to be running McAfee but its subscription ran out and I’m using Norton on my two newer PCs running Window 7 and Windows 8 so I decided to switch to Norton.  I uninstalled McAfee using the uninstall kit that I downloaded from McAfee’s website.  I then installed Norton without any problems.

The problem I’m having is I can no longer map to a drive on the Windows XP from my Windows 7 & 8 PCs.  With McAfee I didn’t have this problem.  I looked around and found a thread that said to use Settings -> Item to Exclude from Auto-Protect SONAR and Download Intelligence Detection -> Configure and add the folder I have set up as shared.  I tried that and the other PCs still can’t map the drive.

I had to Control Panel -> Security Center -> Windows Firewall and turn off the firewall in order for the map drive to work.  Obviously I don’t want the firewall turned off.  Any suggestions and what to do or point me to an article that explains how to fix this?

Thanks for your help.

Harry,

Thanks for the quick reply.  I went to the link and went to follow the instructions on each PC.  I was successful on the Windows 7 & 8 PCs, I changed the trust level to Full Trust and then rebooted.  On the Windows XP PC the Trust Level field does not appear at all so I couldn't change it.  The only difference that I can think of between the XP and the 7 & 8 PCs is the XP is a wireless connections and the 7 & 8 PCs are Ethernet connected to the wireless router.

Hi,

Have you rebooted the wireless system and rechecked for the network security map?

Thanks

Yes I have reboot the PC and rechecked the Network Security Map a couple of times.

Hi,

Have you tried to add devices to the wireless system? As in add the other PCs and the router?

Thanks

On the XP system, try to access the share through "My Network Places" before mapping it to a letter.

If it's not visible in My Network Places yet, I sometimes have to open a command prompt and ping the other systems a couple times.  The shares need to show up before you can map them and when they are visible there they will also be visible in the Norton network security map.

From the XP command prompt:

ping 192.168.1.3  (replace that with the correct ip address of the computer with the share)

or

ping computername  (computer name of system with share).

On my home network, I kept having problems with it consistantly connecting, sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.

The only way I got it to connect everytime is by changing a setting on the windows 7 system.

Open Network and sharing center

on the left click "advanced sharing settings"

then under "all networks"

select the option " enable file sharing for devices that use 40 or 56bit encryption"

(you also may want to click the setting below it to turn off password protected sharing if your XP system is using the default setting of "simple file sharing")

It just seems like it takes several times with XP, but once you get it connected it will always connect.

Dave

Dick,

What I tried is on the XP PC is go to Network Security Map and delete the entries form the Windows 7 & 8 PCs.  I the readded them but still the 'Trust Level' field doesn't show up.  To try to rule out that it might have something to do with wireless I shut down the XP, removed the wireless adapter, and use a long Ethernet cable to physically connect the XP to the router like the other two PCs.  Made no difference.

Dave,

I'm trying to map a drive to a shared folder on the XP from the Windows 7 & 8 PCs.  On the Windows 7 & 8 PCs I can't see the XP PC in Explorar unless I disable the Windows firewall on the XP.

hh,

I don't think anyone asked but did you run the special McAfee cleanup tool before you installed Norton? You can download it from the McAfee website.

McAfee Products > Info

Worth running it even now if you did not earlier ....

Yes I did download and run the special McAfee cleanup tool and reboored before I installed Norton.

Have you tried browsing to the fileshare in question using the Windows File Explorer?

Kind regards,

John

OK ... no stone unturned ...

Hi,

It is possible that the trash from the McAfee installation corrupted your copy of Norton. I'd suggest running the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool

www.Norton.com/nrnr

to make sure you have a clean copy on your system. After rebooting be sure to run live update until the program tells you that all of the updates have been downloaded and installed.

Keep us posted

I think your actually trying to map a share From the XP system To the Windows 7 & 8 systems.

If that is the case, you need to open the Network security map on the XP system and grant full trust to the other 2 systems.

You say you can't "see" the XP system unless you turn off the windows firewall.

The Windows Firewall should be already set to "off" on a XP system if the Norton Firewall is on.

If you look in the control panel under "Windows Firewall" the setting shoud be OFF

Then if you look at "Security Center" under firewall it should say "Norton Internet Security is currently ON"

Thats how it should be in XP.

Dave

OK, so the problem is that the Windows Firewall is still on.  Looks like the Norton install didn't disable the Windows Firewall and put the Norton firewall in its place.  I watched the Norton install and I didn't see any error message and at the end the Norton install said it was successful.

So this is what I did.

  • Reboot the XP.
  • Download and rerun the McAfee removal tool.  It said the removal was incomplete but looking at the log all I saw was 'does not exist' messages for the files & registry entries it tried to remove so I assume that's why it said it was incomplete.  The 1st time I ran it I didn't get the incomplete message.
  • Reboot the XP.
  • Followed the www.norton.com/nmr link to download and run the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool.  When I ran it I got the error message: Failed to detect any Norton product that could be automatically upgraded.
  • Reboot the XP.

I looked around in Settings & Advance but didn't see anything that would turn on Norton firewall.

Should I manually remove Norton and reinstall Norton?  Can I do this without having to buy it again?

Thanks for your help.

Update: I figured out that I can reinstall Norton without having to buy it again.  I used the Norton Removal Tool to remove it, rebooted, and re-installed Norton.  Windows Firewall still enabled.  In the Internet Security Map the 'Trust Level' field still doesn't show for my Windows 7 & 8 PCs.

I just installed the latest version of NIS on another XP system.  (a virtual PC, but that doesn't matter).

By default it turned off the XP firewall.

xp_firewall.JPG

On the left is "Windows Firewall" and the right is "Security Center" both opened up from the control panel.

On the left it says the windows firwall is off, but on the right it says that the Norton firewall is on.

If I try to turn on the windows firewall I get this screen:

turn of firewall.jpg

I click yes to turn off the windows firewall and it goes back to the first screenshot, windows firewall off and Norton firewall on.

Opening up my Network security map I can see all the computers in my network.

Obviously XP does not support "homegroups" so everything is networked by being on the same Workgroup, all systems having the same workgroup name.  But I assume your workgroup must be setup properly if you had them all connected before.

You said it worked if you turned off the windows firewall, when you do that does it not show the Norton firewall as on?

Dave

"You said it worked if you turned off the windows firewall, when you do that does it not show the Norton firewall as on?

Dave"

Dave, when I turn off Windows Firewall I don't see anything about Norton Firewall.

That acreen says you are using Norton Antivirus,  that product does not have a firewall.

Can you comfirm what product you are using, Norton Antivirus or Norton Internet Security?

Dave

Oops, that was my problem.  My Windows 7 & 8 PCs are running NIS and I bought Norton Antivirus for the XP PC.  Contacted Norton via on-line chat and switched to NIS.  The Trust Level field now appears and I changed it for the 7 & 8 PCs to Full Trust.  It works!

Thanks Dave and everyone else for your help.

Happy Holidays!
