I haven't had to open Ghost 9 in about 4 months. Today I went to open it so I could do an image and I'm getting an error box that says,

"Norton Ghost Management Console has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you are in the middle of something, the information you are working on might be lost."

I uninstalled Ghost and reinstalled it and I'm still getting the error. Hopefully somebody has a clue as to what's going on, because I sure don't. Thanks!

It might help to know what version of Windows you are using and whether you can think of any changes to the system since you last used that copy of GHOST.

It's not a program I've used so I can't help on specifics but I'm sure others can.

I’m using XP Pro w/SP2. As far as changes, I’ve installed a few programs and uninstalled a few. I just can’t figure out why a new install of Ghost 9 gives me the same error.

Thanks for the information – let’s hope someone can help you.

Have you made any hardware/software changes since last you opened Norton Ghost 9? Ghost reports all warnings and errors to the Windows Event log. Could you look at the application event logs and check for any warnings/errors from Ghost, Ghost Service, V2i, Volume Shadow Copy Service, etc? Have you run LiveUpdate in Ghost until there are no more updates? There way be a patch that could have been missed. Any additional information is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi , I have the same problem. I tried to open Ghost today to doublecheck my backups were happening and couldn’t open it. I’ve updated my avg and zone alarm progs and have restarted the pc, still no luck. The most recent event was that I updated to service pack 3 (XP system). Hope you can help, it is vital for my business that I back up every night. Worried, N

Which version of Ghost?

Thanks,

RR

Hi RR,

Its version 9. I'm looking at upgrading to solve problem now....

I can tell by the file dates that it backed up on the 13th but didn't backup last night as usual so it must have been something that changed/happened on Thursday (yesterday morning). I cannot put my finger on anything that would cause that problem...

I too am getting this error. I looked at event viewer and the only warning that I see in the current session is for Microsoft Fax. I think though that this is nothing new.

I was able to fix the problem on my pc. In my case, I think the problem had to do with a mapped network drive. I had mapped a drive to a subfolder on a network drive. I also used a letter for that drive that I had used with a usb drive in the past. As soon as I disconnected the offending drive and rebooted, Ghost 9 opened just fine.

I also removed an outlook addin that helps close Outlook when another addin prevents Outlook from closing correctly. I don't think that was the problem but this may be related to the issue and may provide some help to others having this problem.

I have used Ghost 9 since 2004, and everything worked fine until recently (summer 2008 sometime) when I started getting the "Norton Ghost Management Console has encountered a problem and needs to close" error when trying to launch the Ghose Console in order to run a backup.

Workaround (I tried and documented this on 8/25/08): I went to Services panel and stopped/restarted the "Norton Ghost" service.  Then, after a minute or so, I was able to successfully launch the Norton Ghost console (by right-clicking the Ghost icon in system tray) in order to run a backup.  AND, to my pleasant surprise, Ghost was able to run an incremental (not baseline) backup even in this scenario.  So my bouncing of the service didn't interfere with Ghost's ability to calculate an incremental backup.
