There was an instruction book inside the package, but no papers beyond that. The CD itself was naked.
I bought a copy of System Works at a big Manhattan computer store that was going out of business. There is no envelope or insert in the box to give me the activation key I need. Is it somewhere on the outer package? Is there a number on the package that I can use for getting the activation code? The CD is dated 08/07.
P.S. The store is closed.
If you paid by credit card, contact the CC Company right away and raise a "disputed charge". Explain what happened and that you can't use the software because it was incomplete.
Almost certainly they will immediately credit the charge back to your CC account while they sort it out and since they won't be able to you should be OK with nothing to pay.
Then check the weekend flyers for bargains from reputable sources.
http://www.salescircular.com is good place to start on a Sunday. Do you have an earlier version of anything in the same field that will serve as evidence for an upgrade rebate. Often it does not have to be a Norton product to count as evidence.
Here's a typical example for an upgrade/competitive rebate for Norton Systemworks Basic on the Staples website:
5. Enclose proof of previous ownership of a stand-alone, retail (boxed or downloaded) version of any Norton or Symantec software or another company’s antivirus, firewall, antispam, antispyware, utility, or back up software product by furnishing either a copy of the previous product’s CD, first page of manual (usually titled “User’s Guide”), or your confirmation email from your previous download purchase. Products pre-installed or supplied by an OEM manufacturer do not qualify.
Sometimes you can even end up getting it free after rebates and I find they are coming through much more rapidly than used to be the case.
I may indeed have paid by credit card. I’ll look back in the records. And also watch for rebate sales. Thanks for the advice.
You're welcome but check here after the weekend is over and more Norton Staffers will be back. I've seen at least one message indicating they may be able to check the validity of your purchase ..... but it may depend on you having registered the installation with them so don't count on much.
If it was COMPUSA you might check with Tiger Direct but I don't think they have any legal responsibility for anything COMPUSA did before they bought the name and the stores in Florida. But sometimes "goodwill" of customers does come into it <s>
I would recommend that you visit our Subscription Center:

I'm not sure how they can trace the activation key for the product, but it's a good place to start.
Should be inside and not on the outside of the box.
Shop allready closed down?
