Can't uninstall Norton Utilities

I want to do an uninstall/reinstall of my Utilities 14. Using Windows XP (SP3) Add/Remove Programs tool I get the following message: "Messages file '*\Norton Utilities 14\unins000.msg' is missing. Please correct the problem or obtain a new copy of the program."  I've redownloaded the software but when I try to reinstall, I get a message that says I can't install the software until I've uninstalled the existing program.

I do have the exact problem.  I've spent more than an hour with tech support on a chat today and he remotely connected to my computer and attempted to correct the problem.  He tried to uninstall my Norton Utilities 15 and couldn't so he uninstalled and re-installed Norton Internet Security informing that the program had some corrupted files.   He did say that it was NIS 2012 that was slowing down my Internet Browser.  Ever since I've installed both NU15 and NIS 2012 Iast week 'm having problems with my internet.  The page takes about 2-3 minutes to load, today I had internet explorer stop working altogether 3-4 times.  The problem seems to continue even after the technician re-installed NIS... I think it is a problem with NU15, it looks as if the program attempts to start up every once in a while giving me a pop up window that Norton Utilities 15 is missing some core application files.  That message pops up a few times a day and usually stops the internet explorer from working....

Hopefully, you will have more luck removing NU 14 from your computer....

What's happened is that the registry key remains while the uninstall script has been deleted.  You need to delete two entries and then reinstall NU.
