I have N360 version 22.25.3.5 installed on a Windows 7 system. The Norton icon in the notification area has a red X in it, and when I launch the N360 UI to see what’s going on, it tells me that I am unprotected and offers to “fix” the problem. However, after clicking on Fix, Norton goes through the definitions updating steps, only to eventually report that it couldn’t fix the problem. The N360 window that opens provides a link to “Learn more” that leads to a page where I can download NortonUpdater.exe to perform the upgrade manually. So I did that.
The things is, NortonUpdater.exe has now been running for over an hour with no apparent progress. The dialog that appeared in the center of my screen claims that it’s “Migrating,” but there has been no change since I launched the process. Task Manager displays unchanging amounts of RAM and CPU, which supports my suspicion that the updater program is simply hanging.
What should I do – keep waiting (and for how long)? Reboot the machine (maybe the upgrade is somehow completed anyway)? Run a manual N360 installer for Windows 7 (and where to find it)?
UPDATE: After installing the two SHA2-related updates and rebooting after each one, I installed the new version of N360 following the instructions. Norton appeared to install correctly and I was even able to start a scan, but I did notice that now there were two Norton icons in the notification area, including the old one with the red X.
Some time later, when I went back to that PC to check on the scan’s results, the scan window for the new N360 was gone, and so was its icon in the notification area. The icon for the old version that wouldn’t update remains, and clicking on the icon leads to the old version.
I don’t have the Norton page with the instructions in front of me, but while it clearly stated that if your version of N360 is earlier than a certain number, then you need to uninstall the previous N360 to then install the new N360, the instructions for versions later than that number made no reference to needing to uninstall the previous version—suggesting that N360 would take care of it automatically. I have a later version number, but this doesn’t seem to have happened in my case. Shall I do the process over again, this time manually uninstalling the previous N360 and manually installing the new N360? And if so, where can I find the link to the current version of N360 for Windows 7?
Uninstalling older versions is recommended before installing newer ones. Run these removal tools and remove BOTH versions, reboot the machine. Please advise your status when do so we can follow up.
All right, I tried running the NRnR tool and it’s telling me that it can’t connect to the Internet. Tried it on both Ethernet and Wi-Fi, no dice. Bear in mind that this is the only program that claims to be having trouble getting on the ‘Net: I can browse the Web just fine in Firefox, and Windows itself reports that it’s connected to the Internet. Tried disabling the Norton firewall, but that made no difference.
Can you post a download link to a Win7-friendly version of the current Norton 360? It’s looking like the way to go will be to download it to a flash drive and carry it over to the PC where I’m trying to upgrade N360. Then I would choose the “remove only” option and manually install the current version afterward.
I’m not sure that the newer remover is correct in my case. That’s for versions 24 and later, whereas I have version 22.25.
Anyway, I did try it and the choices it offers are to either “remove only” or to “reboot to Safe Mode and continue there,” which don’t match what the instructions for using it say: no “Reinstall” option is offered.
I’d still rather do a direct download, on another computer, to a flash drive.
The new remover is for the NEWER versions. 24 and later, yes!! Do are remove only is suggested. Your direct download would be reinstalling from your Norton account. The NRNR is for older version and should have removed your older product.
@JorgeA If you can please mark the thread as solved if you feel it has been solved. Others may then be able to see your issue and its solution in the event they have a similar issue. TIA!!
