Sorry, just checking again, I see that usually just before you get ""The instruction at 0x7c918fea ", there should be something like

"

svchost.exe- Application Error

X-"

Next time you get the error, could you see is it starts "The instruction at " or a program file name - Application Error"

I think this case is different because AllanMac had a different error message in his shutdown procedure. I think it merits a little more information and seeing what specific process is not closing and causing the instruction memory issue. I hope AllanMac will repond rather than just applying the patches which may result in his/her not seeing the problem any more in consequence.

What information would you like cgoldman? I reset the value back to 0 in the AutoEndTasks. I am not familiar with the zombie workaround method. When I read a bit about it, it seems that I did step one of the workaround by changing the value from 0 to 1. Must you then do steps 2 and 3 for the workaround to work? I am obviously not as computer literate as most of you forum people, so I would appreciate suggested solutions in very simple, step-by-step instructions. Thanks so far for responding to my situation!

Hello again

OK, I'm sorry for any confusion. The autoendtasks should be at 1. Please leave it at 1 and not zero.

If you are using XP I suggest applying the zombie workaround in all events.

Here is the workaround

What needs to happen is to unregister one of our dll's - buShell.dll

  • Start a command shell
    • Select Start menu / Run... / type "cmd" without the quotes
  • Next you will change directories to
    • type cd "\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Backup" with the quotes
  • Then you will unregister the dll
    • type regsvr32 /u buShell.dll
    • a dialog should be shown with the following text : "DllUnregisterServer in buShell.dll succeeded."

Now if you look in this thread you will see my previous response and question. I set it out again.

So pleae try again and report exactly what problem you are now having

Just installed 360 ver 2, and now get this error at shutdown. ccSvcHst.exe - Apllication error
The instruction at "0x00450044" referenced memory at "0x00450044".  The
memory cound not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program

I have tried all the "guesses" Symantec e-mailed me, and just tried this latest solution,

Symantec solution

Symantec provided this solution.
Go to registry
Edit
Hkey current user
controlPanel
Desktop
Autoendtasks and change 0 to 1.
reboot

but my Autoendtasks value already is 1. Hopefully this annoyance doesn't get worse. I had Systemworks and decided to try 360 when it was time to upgrade. Not really happy with it.

Welcome to this forum. Its nice to reply to you again.  Spotted_lady and I have been on a cnet forum. (the cgoldman3 refers to a cnet and not Norton forum).

As I say, I do not know how your autoendtasks became 1, it is not by default. Please leave it as 1. Please make sure we are talking about the same autoendtasks and not the one in Hkey_users.

Please advise your operating system and release.

Go to the Norton 360 main windows, and click on  help& Support, and then about Norton 360, and advise the full version number.

You do not appear to have the standard ccsvchst.exe shutdown issue. So the fixes which I link to below may not assist. However, they are all worth trying.

If you are using Win XP I suggest you also apply the zombie workaround which is posted by me in this thread.

Go here for the details of the other two shutdown amendment.

readvise your findings please.

I have searched the Norton Users Discussion Forum for an answer to the ccSvcHst error message on shut down and there seems to be no common answer. I have a newly installed Norton’s 360 version 2.0 on my Windows XP. I have recently run a full scan and checked for updates, but still get the error message on shut down. I tried one of the remedies from the discussion form where I changed the value from 0 to 1 in the Registry Editor in AutoEndTasks, but I got another error message on shut down: “The instruction at 0x7c918fea referenced memory at 0x9a9329. The memory could not be written.” After getting that message a few times, I went back into the Registry Editor and changed the value back from 1 to 0. What is the easy solution to the ccSvcHst??? I can’t even get on the Norton’s chat line for technical assistance!

Operating system-Windows XP/service pack 3

Norton 360 ver 2.3.1.4

The latest try was to send log file info to Symantec Tech support.  Downloaded the tool (SymNRA) and followed the steps.  Fine until step 11 says to reproduce the problem and click finish.  The problem occurs at shutdown, so it is hard to click finish after the system shuts down.  I have not heard back from them.

Can I assume that you have now applied the zombie patch and all three of the proposed workarounds in this forum for shutdown issue? DId you notice any change at shutdown at all.

I have not tried any of the suggestions here, since I assumed I would get an e-mail back from tech support.  Please list your suggestions again in order of importance, and I will see what happens.  Thanks for trying to help.

As you are using WIn XP you should apply the zombie workaround. (msg 7 of 12 of this thread).

As you have shutdown issues you should apply the first workaround and consider applying the other two, Follow Johna message 4 of 12 of this thread.

cgoldman,

I set the AutoEndTasks back to 1 in the Registry Editor first.

When I typed in the Run command cmd, the following line came up:    Documents and Settings\Allan MacLachlan>

So at the end of that line I typed in cd "\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Backup"   and when I pressed "Return", the message came up: "The system cannot find the path specified."

Any suggestions?

Try this instead please

cd \

cd c:\program files\common files\symantec shared\backup

 return

If for any reason there is a problem you can do one of the following

cd \

cd c:\program files

 return

and check if that works. If it does hit F3 and add \common files

  return

and if that is OK, F3 again and add \symantec shared

  return

and then F3 and add \backup

then you can see which sub-directory it has a problem with.

Alternatively, bring up Explorer (right click start button, click Explore

navigate to program files and check each sub directory exists then

try again.

I followed the first “work-around” posted in message 7 and I didn’t get the error at shutdown, but it took a long time to finally turn off.  I will see what happens for the next few days.  Thanks for your help.  I never did hear back from tech support…sure isn’t like it used to be.

Well thats good. Next you need in your case because you are saying it works but the length of time is an issue, to apply the other two fixes. Go to the link below

link

Tried the “HungAppTimeout” fix, and it seemed to help a little with shutdowm timing.  My “AutoEndTasks” was already at 1 so I left that alone.  I will give it a few days and see if behaves.  Thanks again.

Sounds like you are getting there. Good luck, and come back if any further issues.

Thanks again for all your expertise!
