Chrome Browser Not Monitored

Hi All,
Norton Family is only monitoring activities on Microsoft Edge, yet I want it more on Google Chrome. I downloaded the Chrome extension of the app and set all relevant permissions but it still doesn’t monitor Google Chrome.
The OS is Windows 10 Pro.
Thank you

I’ll have your thread moved to the Norton Family forum board for better exposure to Family users.

Browser based functionality in Norton Family here
Starting from Norton Family v25.x, browser-related functionalities such as Web Supervision, Search Supervision, Video Supervision, and School Time Web do not require Norton Family extensions to be installed or enabled in the browser. Therefore, we recommend that you update to the latest version of Norton Family.

====================================

To resolve why Norton Family isn’t monitoring Google Chrome on Windows 10 despite having the extension installed, try these specific troubleshooting steps:

Verify “On All Sites” Permission
Even if the extension is installed, Chrome requires an explicit permission to read site data that is often missed:

  • Open Google Chrome and click the Extensions icon (puzzle piece) in the top-right.
  • Click the three dots next to Norton Family.
  • Select This can read and change site data and ensure On all sites is checked.
  • Restart Chrome completely.

Update to Norton Family v25.x or later
Norton recently updated its technology so that version 25.x and later does not strictly require browser extensions for Web, Search, and Video Supervision.

  • Check your version in the Norton portal.
  • If you are on an older version, update to the latest release to bypass extension-related bugs.
  • Note: After updating, you may need to clear your browser cache and restart Chrome for the new monitoring method to take effect.

Check for Microsoft Family Safety Conflicts
Since you are on Windows 10 Pro, built-in Microsoft Family Safety settings can sometimes block Chrome’s ability to report data to third-party apps like Norton.

  • Ensure Chrome is not being restricted by Microsoft’s “Web Filtering,” which officially only supports Edge.
  • If Microsoft Family Safety is active, it may require a parent to “approve” Chrome’s use before it can function properly with other monitoring tools.

Enable Incognito Monitoring
Norton Family often fails if a child uses Incognito mode, as extensions are disabled by default there.

  • Go to chrome://extensions.
  • Click Details on the Norton Family extension.
  • Toggle on Allow in Incognito.

Confirm Windows User Assignment
Norton Family monitors based on the Windows User Account.

  • Ensure your child is logged into the specific Windows 10 local or Microsoft account that you linked to their profile in the Norton Family desktop app.
  • If multiple children share the same Windows login, Norton cannot distinguish or monitor their activities separately.

===========================

Are you using a standard user account or an administrator account for the child’s Windows login?
Administrator privileges can effectively “blind” or disable parental control software like Norton Family.

Here is why the account type is critical for monitoring Chrome:

  • Tampering and Disabling: An Administrator has “the keys to the kingdom” and can manually disable services, uninstall the Norton client, or remove the Chrome extension entirely without needing your permission.
  • Bypassing Monitoring: Users with Admin rights can create new local Windows accounts that are not linked to Norton Family. If your child creates and switches to a new “hidden” account, Norton will not monitor Chrome activity there because the monitoring is tied to the specific Windows user profile you assigned.
  • Extension Permissions: In some cases, Windows security policies for Administrators can conflict with how Norton injects its monitoring into Chrome. Norton explicitly recommends using a Standard User account to ensure its rules are applied accurately and to prevent the child from overriding security settings.
  • System-Wide Control: Standard users cannot make broad system changes, such as modifying the registry or system files that Norton uses to track web traffic outside of the browser extension.

How to Check and Change the Account Type:

  1. Go to Settings > Accounts > Family & other users.
  2. Click on your child’s account name.
  3. Select Change account type.
  4. Ensure it is set to Standard User instead of Administrator.

Hi peterweb

Norton Family doesn’t require browser extensions anymore, please check the product version installed on your child PC and make sure you have the latest version 26.2.x installed on your child device. If you have any older version please download from Norton Family Portal and upgrade to the latest client.

Thanks
Norton Family Team.
