Chromebook checkout download of Norton

Old/Newbie here. I have a new Chromebook. Thought I needed Norton so bought the subscription but didn't know which operating system to select during the download process..(no Chrome OS offered as a choice). The checkout/download process was bewildering...believe I first checked Android and then IOS when completing the process. I do now seem to have the Norton360 program on my 'desktop' ..I can click it...it will do its scan thing so I'm assuming everything is as it should be but am not sure because I see "Help" posts that say Norton is not compatible with Chromebooks and the sign up process wasn't clear cut to me. Can anyone please advise and/or reassure?

Thank you.

Norton Mobile Security: Powerful anti-malware protection, effective anti-phishing protection via the browser extension, and more. Norton doesn’t officially support ChromeOS, but its Android app works on Chromebooks (tested & confirmed 2023).

Norton Mobile Security is my favorite antivirus for Chromebook — it provides an excellent array of helpful security tools, and it’s really easy to use. Even though it’s originally an Android app, most of Norton Mobile Security’s features worked perfectly on my Chromebook during testing.

I'm concerned about how you got Norton to install on the Chromebook. Where did you download it from? The Google Play Store is the only place you should be able to download a Norton Android app. And that should have been blocked when the Play Store detected the ChromeOS. If you clicked some link in one of the articles you were reading, you may have been directed to a third party app store. Did you have to change any security features on the Chromebook to complete the install?

Personally, regardless of where you got the download, I would uninstall it and request the refund as noted in my post above.

I asked about desktop vs the Chromebook because you mentioned both in your OP. So I was thinking you had another PC that you loaded Norton on. I now know you only have the one device.

Chromebook, Amazon devices (Kindle/Fire), and Huawei devices are unsupported.

*With 400 million Chromebooks out there it's too bad that Norton isn't more specific in their sign up process about "Chromebook incompatibility". With all the articles out there recommending Norton for Chromebook many new tech illiterate buyers likely assume that the Android selection box must be the right selection choice on sign up and proceed with the purchase.

As it stands I have no idea if the Norton 360 program I now have on my Chromebook is affording me any additional protection above and beyond what Chrome OS provides. I have read in one tech article that it affords superior protection where malware in apps (or extensions?) may be present in so far as 360 does some type of pre sweep on the app before you down load it.

Again, thank you for your thoughts on this.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I did not have Norton on the Chromebook previously. If as you say "Norton cannot be installed on a Chromebook" how is that I now seem to have the Norton program on my 'desktop' and that I can select it and cause it to do a scan etc.?

I only decided to purchase the subscription after reading multiple articles online by seemingly legit tech writers recommending Norton for Chromebooks.

So confusing.

If I opt for the refund what should I do thereafter with the program now on my Chromebook? Try and delete myself or is there some other protocal?

Thank you again for the advice.

As you noted, the ChromeOS is not listed as supported. So Norton cannot be installed on a Chromebook.

Here is a good article from AndroidPolice explaining the security built into the ChromeOS, and how you should not need an anti virus app on those devices.   https://www.androidpolice.com/can-chromebooks-get-viruses/

So you now have 360 on your desktop. Did you have that before purchasing this subscription? If so, no problem. If you ended up purchasing a separate subscription you intended for your Chromebook, you can request a refund for that subscription.   To request a refund see this Norton Support page.    https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/autorenew?inid=communit...
