Clone disk

I am attempting to create a clone of a laptop disk. I have accomplish the “One Time Back up”, created the SRD, recovered the Source recovery point: F:\Lee-Laptop_C_Drive002.v2i Created: 1/17/2013 16:22 Split across multiple files: No Computer name: Lee-Laptop Restore Anyware: Not permitted but tn trying to boot the cloned drive I receive a message “autochk program not found, skipping autocheck” Find a number of reference on Google. Did check disk with repair, no change.Did several BCD edits : export delete create enum all with no change to the situation. I have a number od screen prints taken of the environment so please let me know what you would like to see. I have been working with Deric Stain on this and he suggested that I open it up to the communiy, in particular to RedK, DaveH and Brian K. Lee Hunter

Hi lee,

post the pic of your disk management because you need to highlight all 4 partitions on disk 0 or all the partitions that Ghost can "see"

From what you say we can't tell what you have backed up.

If I remember there are 4 partitions on the primary drive (disk 0) and it is the OEM that I was unsure about.

Anyway you will need to run the "Clone" procedure 4 times to get an exact "clone"

It will take a while for your pic to be visible to us so the quicker you post it the better.

Deric

Sorry I didn't reply to your PM yesterday.

I was a little confused on what the issue was and then I forgot to ask you about it.

Here you are stating that your restored an image but in your PM you mentioned doing a "clone" (a disk copy).

Did you attempt to do a copy drive more than once?

It didn't work the first time so you tried it again.

If you answer yes to that question, how did you delete the partitions so you could try it again?

Second question:

Did you create this image after the failed copy drive attempts?

Dave

Hope this is what you;re looking for.

Thiis s the original laptop disk, the one the backup was created from.StorageMgmt.jpg

Then here is the USB where the backup was written.

Passport.jpg

The terminology is confusing to me so I'll state it with no jargon.

I did one several backups but the lastest was the "One Time Backuo" that you mentioned.

I did one restore using the NRD process (this took over 4 hours, but incuded the "verify")

Since then I've done a chkdsk with reapir (it found erors and reapied them) and several BCD edits.

Lee

I'm still unclear if you attempted more than one "disk copy".

The reason why I was asking you is because Brian_K found a problem with doing more than one disk copy if the partitions were not deleted with disk mangement before the second attempt.

I'm not sure how the system is setup right now, but put the new drive in the system and make sure the old working drive is not attached. Unplug your external drive as well.

You just want the drive that gives you the error "autocheck not found" when you try to boot it.

Boot that drive with the Ghost recovery disk.

Click Analyze > Explorer my Computer.

Make a note of what drive letter the windows partition is, it may or may not be C at this point.

Then go back to the main screen and click Analyze> Open a command shell

In the black box that comes up type: regedit

On the left side click "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" one time to highlight it.

Then on the top menu bar click File>Import

Then browse to X:\Windows\System32\config

select the file "System".  (Replace the X with the drive letter you noted earlier for the windows partition).

After you select "system" it will ask for a temporary name for the registry file.

Type in; Temp and click OK.

Back on the left hand side, double click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to expand it.

You will now see the "Temp" file you loaded.

Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Temp > Mounted Devices

With "Mounted Devices" highlighted in the box on the left, go to the box on the right and delete all the entries.

You can select each one with your mouse and then press the delete key on the keyboard.

After you deleted them all go to the box on the left and click "Temp" one time to highlight it.

Then on the top menu bar click File > Unload Hive.

Close the box for regedit, close the box for the command prompt.

Remove the recovery disk and reboot the system.

Did windows boot properly now.

My directions sound a little confusing but it's easier than it sounds.

Dave

Dave,

as you know I always backup all the partitions/drives at once it is simpler, they then are all contained under one recovery point.

As a re-image option again it is easy to recover all and in the case of a image-restore the recovery point shows all partitions/drives and again easy to select them individually from the one recovery point to "Clone" the drive.

I have used that method on my multi boot machine to "Clone" a drive with 6 O/Ss.

Yes Ghost 15 is a bit confusing using the edit function, I wasn't too sure about the OEM, I would have thought it was only necessary to image-restore C: and the OEM hasn't got a drive letter so I assume it is part of C: partition.

Thanks for taking it on and I will be interested in the outcome and what you find and advise.

Thanks,

Deric

Lee,

just for my benefit could you post a pic of what Ghost can see when you run a "one time backup"?

It may or may not be helpful to DaveH.

I have posted two pics,

Pic 1 shows my disk management, I have a primary drive 0 in 4 partitions with O/Ss on each and a secondary drive 1 in 2 partitions. On the latter is a O/S and a data partition (which I don't backup with Ghost).

This is what I call a "clean" drive with No "complicated" partitions.

Because I build my own computers I format all drives so that I have only O/Ss installed plus apps.

I don't do laptops and that is why I don't have the likes of OEMs etc.

Pic 2 shows what Ghost can see when I select a "one time backup"  and note that I highlight all 5 partitions with the O/Ss on and Not the data partition.

That ensures that all 5 partitions with the O/Ss and apps are backed up under the One recovery point.

That is the easiest way to both recover and "clone".

Dave & Deric,

I'll do as you both ask tomorrow.  Today is my Sunday, my "day of rest" and I'll need the energy especially this week, based on how hectic last week was.

Thanks so very much for your collective help and I'll be back to you tomorrow.

Lee

Dave,

Having some difficulties.....

I'm ok down to brose to x:................

In the dalog box, in the type of file is Reg

There are no Reg files in config, only 4 folders:  Journal(empty), Regback(empty), TxR(empty) and systemprofile which has an APPDATA folder.

If I change the type of file to "all amefiles", there are two files named "system".

Neither bring up a dialog box asking for a temporary name.

Where have I gone wrong?

Lee

Deric and Dave,

Here is the screen print of the One Time Backup view.

It it will help us come to a conclusion, I'm willing to start over at the beginning.

Delete the backupos from the USB, repartition and reformat the receiving drive.

Take it step by step and post screen prints anywhere along the way.

Just let me know what's best for you.

LeeOneTime.jpg

Lee if you look at the screen in message 8 you will see 5 partitions highlighted all together and those are in a folder on my external drive.

What ever Ghost sees highlight them all and direct the backup into a new folder on the USB drive.

No need to format just create another folder and that "Recovery Point" will be contained in that folder so you only have the one recovery point and it will list all the partitions you have backed up.

The target drive to be "Cloned" must be deleted again to create unallocated space and each partition restored to the target one after the other.

Do this before you start again.

I will let Dave guide you through it now,

but, I would be inclined to run another "One Time Backup" into a new folder on the USB drive, it won't do any harm, and "Clone" it using the instructions provided in the PMs.

I too will be interested in Dave's advice and instructions.

Deric

Thanks Deric,

Question(s)...........

What's on the installation disk that will let me manage the target disk......repartion, format, delet files, etc?

Diskpart,

boot up with the SRD and go to Analyze and open the command prompt and type in diskpart.

You can use that to work on the drive.

Don't run the format command because you need unallocated space on all the target disk to start with.

Dave and Red use that, I don't because I have a couple of docking stations that I can use to prepare the drive.

Deric

Success!

I restarted with a fresh install of Windows on the targetr drive, then did a disk restore from the one time backup and all is well.

Thank you Deric and Dave for your hand holding through this process.

Much appreciated.

Lee

Glad you have cracked it,

Deric

I'm glad you got it working.

We had a power outage here yesterday and my ISP was offline until today.

I tried to get here through a dialup but I had a hard time getting the pages to load.

Dave

Dave,

Just because I couldn't get it to work, would you please explain the problem I had with the registry import you wanted me to do.

I may need it in the future.
