A couple items.

  • Windows Sever 2003 is not supported by the consumer product.  Backup Exec System Recovery is a more appropriate solution.
  • You can clone to a different drive as long as the HDD controller does not have to use a different driver.  SATA to SATA, IDE to IDE, etc.

If I might, let me clarify this a bit.  Backup Exec System Recovery is the solution that has a feature tailor made for what you are trying to do.  It is called Restore Anywhere.  It can restore to dissimilar hardware, e.g. IDE to SATA or SCSI.  And as a plus it does support your operating system.

On the other hand, Norton Ghost, while very similar to Backup Exec System Recovery, does not have the Restore Anywhere feature in it nor can its images be enabled for use by Backup Exec System Recovery for the Restore Anywhere feature.  So, this is where Erik's second point applies.  If the hardware is sufficiently similar, Norton Ghost can clone your machine.

(Tip: Should you choose to use Backup Exec System Recovery to do what you are asking, there is one thing that can make the Restore Anywhere feature even easier to use - have the network, storage, and video drivers for the new machine either installed or available on the old machine before you make the backup that you will restore on the new machine with Restore Anywhere.)

Thanks everyone for the advice.  It sounds like Backup Exec System recovery is the way to go.  I am going to probably buy it.
