Comcast 'update' from N360.5 to N Sec Suite 20 now slows IE and locks up Chrome

Hello - 9 yr old dell Pent4 2.80 w/ 4GB Ram, XP  - I had N360 version 5, from Comcast, but my IE was getting slow, had to keep it cause Chrome did not work w/the auto login. Found that Norton 6 has fixed that, talked to Comcast how to update mine, gave me a link, but what was installed was Norton Security Suite 20 - wiped all my previous N360 logins out, lucky I had a file for that. BUT NOW IE runs better than the Chrome, but hangs when pages with multiple images (like a staples ad) and sometimes I hit 'stop' then resend, and the page loads. Chrome - well now it works with the auto 'logins' but it up and chokes when 2 windows are open, even has a never seen before pop-up box saying do I want to kill the non-responding pages.

Did I miss something here, since another Comcast poster got the N360 version 6 today ?

Thanks  Tim

Hi timhar47,

Comcast never offered N 360 v5 - the N 360 is a retail version.  Norton Securty Suite (NSS)  v 5 was offered by Comcast, as well as NSS v 6 and now the most current version of NSS is version 20.2.0.19.

Please open NSS, click on Support and the About and tell us the full version number you have.  I beleive you are just confused with the N 360 v 5, as NSS is a clone of N 360 and is slightly different from N 360.

You said you had a fiel fro your prior log-ins - do you stillhave that?  Havwe you tried to Import that file into your current install?

Is the current install of NSS working properly and the slowness is only with a browser?

After you got the NSS v20 installed, did you run LiveUpdate (rebooting when requested) until such time as it responds "no updates found".  I ask as there was a recent  update that corrected slowness caused by the Norton Toolbar.

What ever more info you can give and results of what we asked for you to run will help us get to the bottom of this.

Hello - yes I guess I got confused by the 'jump' in numbers. Before the download it was 5. something - I assumed it was N360, because it was no different from when I went from my 'store purchased' N360 to the Comcast download a year or so ago. When I saw the other post about Comcast, from yesterday date he referred to his load as 4.something I got confused with another post in the 360 file. Sorry bout that.

So - mine is now NSS 20.2.0.19 - it changed from 'Identity Safe' which was used before, to the 'Vault and Login Assistant'. Yes I reloaded my N360 backup logins file, although it was from Nov, so I lost a few. At first I was pleased, as the Chrome now had the 'Login Assistant' so tried it out w/FBook - but as soon as I opened a second tab to read a story on a post, the page would freeze, scrolling did jerky scrolling, then a pop-up arrived, that was never seen before in the last year - about slow pages and did I want to wait or kill.

My Chrome was fast and free before this, and my IE8 was slow, which I atribute to MS' stopping to service IE8, and making it so XP could not accept IE9. (I dumped Fox, after they updated and no longer worked w/N360/NSS )

The funny part is my IE is a little quicker now, but it still halts, many times when I am going to a 'next page' - I found that if I hit the 'stop' and then resend the web address, the second or next page would mysteriously come right up.

I guess I feel that too much PC time is getting eaten up by the new stuff, but like I said, cant afford a new one - fixed income.

The slowness seems to be only browser related. I have always run scans, and MBAM(free version) and stay away from games, apps, movies, and bad websites.

2) Oh, i also am a bit cautious about a 'new' thing - even tho one is logged into 'Login Asst' that when I go to use it from the toolbar, it wants the password again? I dont like typing passwords when browser window open - seems to defeat the protection purpose of the whole thing (I realize thats separate minor issue)

Tim

I will ad that sometimes both work fine, then again they dont. This morning, when I went to FB on Chrome - the FB pictures would only half load - meaning several had a little tiny box with an x in it. I hate this mess - i have to keep going back and forth between browsers to just do a simple task.

I guess this post went to sleep? ?

Hi timhgar47,

The post did not intentionally go to sleep - just before you responded on the 10th we had a tornado hit about a mile from where I am and we lost power and cable (internet) until yesterday morning and I am just now getting caught up on everything - so I am sorry if it seems like I abandoned you.

I asked if you had run LiveUpdate (rebooting when requested) until it responded "no udates available.  The update I was talking about that fixed the slowness for some users did not change the version number - but you still need to be totally updated.  Please try that.

I am not convinced your FB problems are being caused by Norton.

Can you provide any addtional info in regards to Login Assistant?  Have you trie it with IE or FF?

Hello - sorry you had a tornado - thats no fun. Yes live update has been auto-running since install, and manual request responds w/no updates.

I get weird things - like when I request to go to a page in IE, it sits there, with the green progress bar ticking, and going nowhere. I found that if I hit the 'ESC' or the red X to stop, then resend the same page request - wham, immediate action.

I did unload Chrome the other day, and loaded Firefox, both FF & IE do work w/ID Vault, but am trying out a few days w/o it running to see if any difference.

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback - ple4ase let us know how thigns go after a few days.

All in all mY FF and IE8 are acceptable. I suppose an update inbetween must have helped, back when this started. I still get strange things, like a webpage open just sits there doing nothing but green bars, I hit ESC and resend the command line, and immediate load of the page. But that is unrelated to this subject line. Thanks for your time and replies.
