Apologies to the other people who have posted on this subject but reply doesn't seem to work on that existing thread.
I've tried to invoke command line scanning using the scanstub.exe to invoke anti-virus scanning of downloaded files. I'm using Internet Download Manager.
Scanning does kind of work but isn't very stable or user friendly.
There are obviously a number of command line switches for scanstub but I can't find them documented anywhere.
The specific command for scanning a file or directory is: scanstub.exe /context "c:\program files"
I found using this to work ok but it's screen and user interaction wasn't very friendly - the scan takes place in a minimised window so if you don't know it is taking place it will seem like nothing has happened. Also the process doesn't seem to close down cleanly leaving processes in memory the result being scanstub won't run again as it states that it is already running.
Command line scanning worked very effectively in Internet Security. If the code isn't reusable from this other product then at least the design should be.
Well try downloading the EICAR test file and run a command line scan on it. I wonder if Norton will warn you if there is anything malicious, even though the window is minimized, eg. a popup. Have you gone to Task Manager to tryed to maximise the window?
I don't have a problem with the anti virus scanning just the repeatability of the operation when invoked from the command line.
If I download a number of files the first one downloads ok and the scanning kicks it which says it completes ok. The next file I download does not complete the virus scanning as 360 reports that a scan is already in progress. Following this email traffic does not work as the anti virus scanning of email is also locked.
If you do not have WinRar installed, please install it now. There will be an option for virus scan in the main GUI. Copy the command and the parameters. Maybe it will work.
