Computer won't shut down properly with NIS2013

Lately -- I believe it's since I switched from NIS 2012 to 2013 -- the active process "ccSvcHst.exe" won't quit (I get a "not responding" message) when I try to close out of Windows (XP) to shut off my computer.  This happens every time and it rarely happened before.  I have to close it down manually.  Any suggestions?

I've seen this problem on some PC/laptops but not on others. For the moment it is worth posting your operating system, release, graphics card .

Windows XP -- SP3.  Don't know what my graphics card is.

Having the same problem, computer hangs on shutting down.

Windows Vista SP2, graphics card in Nvidia 9600GT 1GB

Try clicking on Support - Get Support to run  Autofix to check your installation and fix what it finds.

Be sure you have run LiveUpdate manually a few times,  until no updates are available.

Also having the same problem--computer hangs on shutdown (ccsvchst.exe fails to stop).

Windows XP SP3; NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS (using current driver version 306.23).

Note--I have tried the Autofix, but no problems were found with my installation.

(Didn't mean to hijack the thread...just wanted to notify Norton that another user--me--is having a "ccsvchst.exe issue" with the upgrade to NIS 2013.  Thank you.)

Did you participat in the beta testing for the 2013 products?

If so did you follow Tim Lopez's instructions?

If you participated in the Public Beta, please be sure to restore to the backup you made before installing the beta software. If you did not make a backup, please UNINSTALL the beta software before installing the Final Release. You can uninstall by going to Add/Remove Programs (Windows XP) or Programs and Settings (Windows Vista / Windows 7 / Windows 8), selecting the beta products, and clicking on UNINSTALL. If you install over the beta product, unexpected errors could occur which would require you to uninstall and reinstall the product. Be sure to follow these steps precisely

Hi there

Just thought I'd add to this that I'm also having the same problem. Sometimes on shutdown I get the ' End program' window - ccsvchst.exe. End Now stops this and the computer will shut down then.

I'm also on Windows XP SP3. NVIDIA GeForce - don't know which version though.

Is this a known problem - Norton are going to fix?

Thanks

Shep1

As the original poster, I just wanted to add that I didn't participate in the beta testing and that neither Autofix nor manually running Live Update solved the problem.

peterweb, no, I'm sorry; I was not involved in Beta testing.  I installed from the Upgrade service, right over the last product, which was NIS 2012.

This sounds like a Windows issue.

Click on Start button and search for SFC.exe. Right click on the file and choose Run as Administrator.

Let us know if it finds and fixes anything.

peterweb, I found two files:  C:\I386\SFC.exe, and C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sfc.exe.  (Both are 9,728 bytes and 12,288 bytes on disk, so I assume they're the same although dates modified are 8 days different).

I tried right-clicking and running both as Administrator.  In both cases, a DOS window flashed briefly; but I didn't see any text and the DOS windows self-closed very quickly...so, apparently, they found and fixed "nothing."  Is this what you would have expected to happen?  Thank you.

Hi All

I felt  should post on this topic, not that I am an expert in norton or pc's for that matter.

I have had numerous suggestions regarding this particular file also known as symantec framework under vista, I had one machine on vista which regularly refused to shut down, and an xp machine that crashed every 1/4 hour without fail.

Was advised it was windows issue, upgraded the xp machine to vista, same problem.

Then they suggested hardware faults, i believed them and fitted new heatsinks, fans, memory, same problem.

It eventually transpires that the 2013 program has serious issues on some machines with AMD processors and I am told some pentiums.

Best advice I have had is to uninstall it, then use norton removal tool to clear up scrag ends, install 2012 and you should find all your problems gone.

once installed, disable automatic updating (the program) to prevent 2013 being installed until it is actually fixed.

Norton do not seem to be very forthcoming in admitting this release is sh..... pants.

atb paul.

Is it too much to ask to have Symantec address this problem (which seems to have been introduced in 2013) rather than forcing users to roll back to 2012?

As noted in PaulMowers post, the AMD processors have had some issues with Norton's 2013 products. Norton is aware of it and is working on it , along with the other issues reported on the forum.

Is your processor from AMD?

If you wish to go back to 2012 you can download it from   www.norton.com/nis12

Be sure to run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available.

peterweb (and BlebNevus and paulmowers), thanks.  Processor is an Intel Pentium 4 530 (Dell Dimension 4700).  I suppose I'll just stick with NIS 2013 until Norton develops a fix.  In the interim, I am downloading a copy of NIS 2012 and will store it on an 8GB backup memory stick (pending reaching the end of my practically limitless patience at ccSvcHst.exe freezing my shutdowns :smileyindifferent:).

No, my computer has an Intel processor.  The problem is evidently not limited to AMDs.

And is it a fairly new Intel processor?  I only say this because some of the Symantec employees have posted that the processor compatibility problem may also extend to what they referred to as being older legacy Intel processors.  I believe that was in response to  poster stating that they had a Pentium III class Intel processor (if I recall correctly).

Kind Regards,

John

Things have gotten worse.  For the second time since the switch from 2012 to 2013 the program failed to load properly on startup - and was unable to fix itself through Autofix.  The first time I had to go to the trouble of uninstalling and reinstalling NIS 2013.  This time I just rolled back to 2012 - something I've never had to do in all the years I've used Norton.

If any Symantec employees are reading this, I'm hoping the problem will be addressed and the solution posted prominently (in a sticky on this forum) so we'll know when it's safe to try 2013 again.

BlebNevus, things are also getting worse with my NIS 2013.  I'm now seeing "freeze-ups" of NIS 2013, especially after my computer sits idle for a while (long enough to activate my G-Force screen saver, 15 minutes).  When I Ctrl-Alt-Del to try and close NIS 2013, Windows Task Manager focuses on the process "alg.exe" when it opens.  I don't know if that's relevant or not; but that's the process which is "highlighted" when Windows Task Manager opens (after Ctrl-Alt-Del).  Is "alg.exe" a process that NIS 2013 uses?

I'm also still unable to shut the computer down normally (I'm still getting the "ccSvcHost.exe" issue).
