Constant background scanning

I have two sets of 1T RAID1 drives.  NAV 2011 background scans never end.  It weems to be running ok since it waits patiently until my keyboard is idle and then it runs and runs and runs but it stops politely when my mouse moves.  I like to feel secure but I also want my hard drives to have a rest now and then.  I have turned off “Background Scans” in the computer settings but no joy.  Is there no control?

Thanks for the response.  My NAV was installed about 6 months ago.  I can't run a manual scan (no password) but the tasks list reports a "Idle Full System Scan" completed 8 days ago which ran for 5 hours starting at 12:30pm.  My OS is Win7 Pro 32bit w/SP1.  E8500 GA-EP45-UD3P, 4GB RAM, GForce9.

drdbrown - Sorry to hear you are having a problem.  I'm a little confused about your comment about you tried to run a manual scan but didn't have the password.  Could you be running a Corporate version of NAV, could that be why you need a password?  A Corporate version may be set up to scan when ever the mouse is asleep?  Just asking..

No, this is a retail version.  I am not sure why but when I try to setup a schedule to scan once in a while NAV asks for my login and PW.  Since I don't have a PW currently on my home computer the task scheduler throws an error " An error has occurred...0x800705f: Logon failure:...blank paswords not allowed.."  .  This can be by-passed somehow because it looks like the auto scan has been created.

Do you want me to try running a manual scan and see if that satisfies NAV so it won't constantly run it's background scan?

drdbrown - Years ago, I did have the a Corporate version of NAV installed and it wouldn't let me setup a schedule for scans (I could do very little with that Corporate setup).  I am now running NIS 2011 and I can setup a scan, without having to enter a password.  Maybe someone with a better understanding of NAV, will add a comment.  Good luck..

Hello drdbrown

You should be able to set up a scheduled scan, but you do have to turn off the idle scans first.

You can override the Idle Time Scans settings to schedule a Full System Scan on specific dates and times or at periodic intervals. However, before you schedule a Full System Scan, you need to turn off the Idle Time Scans option.

To schedule a Full System Scan

  1. In the Norton Internet Security main window, in the Computer Protection pane, click Scan Now.

  2. In the Computer Scan pane, click Custom Scan.

  3. In the Scans dialog box, next to Full System Scan, click Schedule.

  4. In the Scan Already Scheduled dialog box, click Yes.

  5. In the Schedule dialog box, click New to enable the scheduling options.

  6. Set the frequency and time at which you want the scan to run.

Most of the frequency options include the additional options that let you further refine the schedule. Set the additional options as required.

  7. Click OK.

This was copied from the Norton Help Center. Hope it helps. Thanks.

Thanks for your help, there is no problem making it manually scan or schedule a scan.  I have done both scans and also turned off the background scanning however the background scanning is still churning away when I leave the machine alone for a few minutes.  Maybe these huge hard drives these days are confusing for NAV.  Like I said I have two arrays of 1TB (four drives  total) in RAID 1 and then a 300GB drive hanging off the side for temporary storage.  One of the RAIDs is controlled by the INTEL ICH10R on-board controller and the other is using Gigabyte’s GSATA2_0/1.  Not sure if that at all matters but that’s that.

If you have any other suggestions on how to stop the incessant background drive churning so the drives can take a rest from time to time and cool down I am all ears.

Hi drdbrown,

It certainly sounds like Norton is in the process of doing an Idle Time Full System Scan, which stops whenever the system is no longer idle but resumes again later.  Even though you have turned off "background scans" if there was one in progress it may be continuing until completion.  If I were you, I would do a simple uninstall / reinstall of Norton via Add/Remove Programs.  Upon reinstallation, quickly go to the settings for the Idle Time Scans and the Idle TIme Optimizer (which invokes the Windows Defragmenter) and turn them both off, click "Apply" and "OK".  Doing so before they have a chance to start will prevent them from ever running.  The time it will take you to reinstall Norton is minimal, and given the aggravation that having background tasks running on multiple large drives is causing you, it would be time well spent, in my opinion.  Note that Idle TIme Quick Scans will still run periodically, but they take only a few minutes to complete.

I think your previous instructions have worked.  After the manual scan and turning off background scanning my computer has enjoyed a peaceful day without the constant grinding away.  The drives feel cool to the touch and so far so good.  Thanks for the guidance.  If the same problem happens again I will try the un-install / re-install method.

Thanks
