Constant reconnections to local network

As in topic. My norton in history shows constant stream of connection to my local network → this pc is my home pc that never connects to any other network (maybe norton VPN from time to time if you count). I noticed that around the time this logs happens → i get really annoying sound stutter.
Before I wrote this post → I reset the history and this is the effect:

Yup, connection spam and the UDP(17) traffic block spam have been happening since v24 was first a thing and has yet to be fixed.

@Tomasz_Zwolinski @RaveBlack As we all know Norton has ignored the UDP (17) flooding issue for a very long time. Its not a priority for whatever reason. The only workaround is disabling IPv6 in method # 3 below: ** This does NOT affect the performance of Norton in any way.

AI Overview

To disable notifications or blocks related to

UDP 17 (often identified as Windows Networking/NetBIOS) in Norton 360, you need to adjust the Smart Firewall settings. Recent versions of Norton 360 (v25+) allow for more detailed editing of these rules.

Here are the methods to address this, based on Norton user community solutions:

Method 1: Modify Firewall Traffic Rules (Recommended)

This method allows you to stop the log alerts without completely disabling your firewall protection.

  1. Open the My Norton window and click Open next to Device Security.
  2. Click Settings and select Firewall.
  3. Go to the Traffic Rules tab.
  4. Look for rules related to Windows Networking, NetBIOS, or UDP 17.
  5. Edit the rule to Allow the traffic instead of blocking it, or delete the rule that is creating the alert.
  6. Click Apply and Close.

Method 2: Turn Off “Uncommon Protocols”

If the alerts are coming from Norton’s intrusion prevention, disabling the monitoring of uncommon protocols can stop the notifications.

  1. Open Settings > Firewall.
  2. Locate Uncommon Protocols.
  3. Move the switch to Off.
  4. Click Apply.

Method 3: Disable NetBIOS in Windows (Alternative)

If Norton continues to block it, you can disable NetBIOS at the operating system level, which stops these specific requests entirely.

1. Open Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center.
2. Click Change adapter settings.
3. Right-click your network adapter (Ethernet or Wi-Fi) and select Properties.
4. Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
5. Click Advanced > WINS tab.
6. Select Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
7. Click OK on all windows.

Important Considerations

  • Version 25+ Specifics: If you are running the newest Norton version (25.xx), you may need to check the Intrusion Prevention exclusion settings, as some users report that IP exclusions are necessary to stop constant logging.
  • Security Risk: Turning off firewall features can make your computer more vulnerable to attacks. These methods should only be used if you have determined that the UDP 17 traffic is safe, such as in a local, trusted home network.
