Converting to 360 from Norton Security

Do I need to uninstall my Norton Security (US) before installing 360?  For that matter, does such a switch even require an installation change at all, or just the license change?  If uninstall+install is indeed required, should I do a a "complete" uninstall first using the Norton uninstall tool?

Also, I think I've read where a credit card is required on the account even if 360 was bought at retail with a product key (which is what I did), but I am hesitant to go ahead and enter one now for fear it will immediately charge me for a subscription, even though the key is currently shown as newly-active in my account for a year, but "Installed on 0 devices" (of 5).

Thanks.

Hello @Ardmore

Just had occasion to add already paid for new key.
I was able to step thru registering new key with my Norton account without adding payment information.
I reached out to support - requested new key term (366 days) added to current term (19 days).
Support cancelled new key.  Subscription Status: 385 Days Remaining

Ardmore:
Thanks for the information.  I see where the Amazon listing specifically states that a credit card must be placed on file for use by a (cancellable) auto-renewal subscription.  As I said in my initial post, I was expecting such a requirement.  So I was surprised when I wasn't required to do so in order to activate or begin using the key.  As I mention above, there was an "Activate Subscription Renewal" link in My Account after the key was added, but that was not presented as mandatory.

Hey, when users don't want to provide payment information.
I'll point em' to @Ardmore => https://community.norton.com/converting-360-norton-security

I purchased the Product Key -- which was described as a Norton Security Key (US) -- from Gamivo, via a link from Google Shopping.  In retrospect I'm glad it turned out to be a Norton 360 Key (per the support I reached at 800-995-3086) since, as I explained, US Norton Security Keys have become increasingly hard to find, and when available they are usually a good deal more expensive than 360 Keys.

Hmm...Gamivo...new to me.  Thanks

So, you selected Norton 360 offer that'll activate for US.  And your Norton 360 is v22.24.5.6

I'm not sure what the url was.  But now that you raise the question, it could very well have been a Norton estore url.  I was trying various approaches, and at one point clicked on an invitation to subscribe at a first-year discounted price for Norton Security.  Maybe that took me to the estore.  I did not want to actually proceed with that offer that since I had already purchased an unused Product Key, but may have seen the 800-995-3086 support number on that page, and called it for help in activating the Key.

I had already seen your suggestion to do a clean uninstall/reinstall.  Thanks for the link to your clean install.

Despite numerous helpful and appreciated suggestions from @_bjm and @9wood, I think I answered most of my own questions by impatient barreling ahead.  So I'll mark this post as the solution.

First, I should mention that I have now applied the new Norton 360 Deluxe key to a third pc that had Norton Security.  This time I did NOT do an on-top installation (or any installation) of 360, but the results seem the same.  The additional 360 features appeared.  And all references are now to 360, with the exception that the heading in Classic View says still says Norton Security, similar to what @peterweb reports with no issues.

Details:

Converting from Norton Security (US) to Norton 360 (US) using a 360 Product Key (I don't think I've ever had a subscription or entered a credit card), the usual Help->Enter Product Key doesn't seem to work.  Instead I had to call Norton Support at the number listed at the top of the My Norton Support site (800-995-3086).  The agent was able to activate the key, but I had to wait about 15 minutes for it to show as Activated on the My Norton Site.

Next, I learned that to apply the Activated Key to the first pc, I had to click "Remind Me Later" on the red and white Subscription-Expired screen, which opened the usual interface (but still with a red Subscription Expired warning) that then allowed me to access the place where the key could be entered (via Help->Enter Product Key).  The key can then be input into other machines the same way.

Apparently these  steps are sufficient to have Norton Security convert to 360, including the additional features it provides.

It is then advisable to to run Live Update repeatedly until it says no Update is available.

And as  @9wood and @_bjm pointed out, it is probably prudent to do a full reinstall, using the remove and reinstall tool.  I haven't done so yet, but expect to soon.

Finally, despite the suggestion on the My Norton site to start a subscription, including putting a credit card on file, this wasn't required to complete the conversion.  Without the Product Key, a subscription would have been required, of course.  Also, I suppose there is a possibility that adding a credit card to My Norton Account might have been required had I been able to activate the Product Key without help from phone Support.  I  guess I might find out a year from now (assuming I don't move to a different security app), as it will  be 360-to-360, i.e. I'll no longer be switching from one "variety" of Norton to another.  (I can't know for sure that the fact my key was for 360 instead of NS is why I ended up having to get activation help from Support, but that seems like a reasonable guess.)

Were my machine.  I'd clean uninstall/install Norton 360.  Just me.

I wrote out a more detailed response to your questions, but -- despite the frequent appearance of "Auto Saved" -- when I went to preview it, it said something like "You are not authorized to view this page."  It had logged me out (which is probably the reason for that message), and when I logged back on, nothing had actually been saved.  So I'm just going to post a less-detailed response.

Norton Account does show me as having a 1-year subscription to Norton 360, with the Product Key shown next to that.  It says it expires in 1 year.  There is a link for "Activate Subscription Renewal."  If I click on the i next to that it says, "When your renewal is active, your subscription will automatically renew annually or monthly, depending on your billing cycle."  Again, I don't think I have ever given Norton a credit card number, and -- at least at present -- it doesn't appear there's any need to do so.  I wonder if the fact that I ended up needing Support to enter my Product Key this year had any bearing on that.

I'm glad that @peterweb can confirm that having 360's Classic View show Security on the top instead of 360 (as it does on one of my machines) is something that is probably of no concern.

A clean uninstall/reinstall sounds like a good idea, and I will try to do that soon.  I will use the rnr tool as @9wood suggested.

While I don't want to re-try the diagnostic tool at the moment -- for fear I might lose the post again -- I will note that automatic live update has been running OK per History.

as I recall @peterweb Norton 360 Classic view reports Norton Security.  No worries.

Yes. Here is my current classic interface. Product works as it should for Norton 360. I think it may be a holdover issue in the Windows registry from when I did have the older Norton Security.

Thanks for the replies.  I think things are OK now, but with a few oddities that I believe are probably inconsequential.

I suddenly got very busy so I'll post more later.  But I will mention a few things now:

-- I have had Norton Security for years, always inputting a new Product Key the day the old one expires.  I don't recall ever having a problem before, aside from the fact that retail NS keys (for the US, anyway) have become increasingly hard to find.  I have never had a subscription or provided a credit card -- and as it turns out, that's still the case.

-- So this year I bought (what turned out to be) a 360 Product Key. (When I bought it, the seller said it was Norton Security Deluxe, but it turns out that per support it was actually for Norton 360 Deluxe.  Read on.)   After I entered the new "Norton Security" key, it said it had to take me to My Account to provide additional information (or something like that), but at the Account website it didn't actually ask for any information.  So I searched Support at My Account on how to enter the product key (or something like that), and it just took me back to what I had been doing in the first place.  So I was going in circles.  (Somewhere in this process it was also offering that, with a subscription, I could "renew" Norton Security at a highly discounted price for the first year.)

-- So I called Support at the number listed in My Account.  They were able to activate the key, although it took awhile to populate.  While My Account now showed my Norton Security as expired, it didn't show how to activate my devices with the new 360 activated key.  The Norton User Interface kept quickly switching to a "Product Expired, Renew Now" (or something like that) screen.  Finally I found that if I clicked "Remind me later" it would show the old interface long enough to enter the product key.  Then the Renew nag stopped, Subscription Status said 366 days remaining, and there was no longer a red warning that I needed to subscribe.

-- I then downloaded Norton 360 and installed it on top of Norton Security (i.e., I did NOT uninstall NS first).  I then entered the Product Key, with no difficulty, into my Norton Security Installation on a second pc.  And again installed 360 "on top."

-- I'll mention one of the probably-inconsequential oddities now, which is that on the first pc the top border of the UI -- as well as the desktop icon -- still say "Norton Security," even though the tooltip seen when hovering over the tray icon says "360."  And in the program list, it is called Norton 360 (though in a folder that says Norton Security).  On the second pc, ALL references are to 360.  The exception being that again the app-list folder is named "Norton Security" (is that the normal app-list folder name with 360?).   Regardless, it is clear on both machines that the actual product has changed from Norton Security to 360, given newly-appearing features such as VPN and Backup.

-- I ran the diagnostic tool (Help -> get Support) on the first pc, thinking it might change all the "Norton Security" nomenclature to 360 (even though, again, I doubt that's of any consequence).  But instead, in two tries, it came up with the following "Attention" screen about its failure to fix Internet Connectivity problems...which is strange because I'm not having any Internet Connectivity problems.  Nor is 360 as far as I can tell.  For example a manual Live Update runs fine.  I'll check later to see if any background connectivity-requiring tasks like Automatic Live Update have been running.  And what the status of the browser extensions is, eg Norton Safe Web.

it would be best to use the rnr tool to do a fresh install of the 360

they are similar but be on safe side and do the uninstall of security

after you do the uninstall of security ( using tool) put in the address for setup ( on the card you have)

go thru the set up and make sure after its done you check the live update until its all updated ( maybe a few it does install) may have you restart once or twice to apply

after you do that its best to run the auto fix ( sometimes get a installation error)

in classic mode top right click help

on the left click get support

let that run ( takes a minute or so) and if it finds anything it should say what it was and may prompt you to restart

if thats all good than all you need to do is go thru the settings to set where you want ( preferences)

there is also a diagnostic report in scans ( bottom one) can run that should show all green

and you will be good for 1 year
