Jason, can you explain what you mean by "launch" the programs ?
Can you for instance open MSN from the system tray and see the sign in window ........ but not able to sign in?
Or does the program not respond at all?
Can you right click Messengers icon and "open messenger" ?
Do check anyway within Norton under settings/firewall/program rules ...... make sure your programs are not blocked in any way here.
Are you using Vista with UAC enabled?
Is this problem with Messenger and Yahoo a new problem?
For the cookie problem, open browser (I presume Internet Explorer) go to Tools/Internet options/security tab,
click once on Internet Zone and slider should be set to Medium - High only,
go to Privacy tab, slider no higher than Medium.
Use the box below labelled Sites, add some of the sites you are having problems with.
Apply/ok any changes made
You can test your cookie status here:
http://www.iatn.net/help/cookies/index.asp?once=1
If you have any other type of security software it could be that ........ maybe if you have the add-on pack from Norton v2 ?
Some sites might have a certain word that the software picks up on and blocks and the site thinks you have cookies blocked.
Hopefully you haven't installed another firewall? or other security software incorporated into the browser ?
Thanks again for your reply.
I'm using XP with SP2.
When I double-click Yahoo! or MSN, they launch, but when I try and sign in, a message saying it hasn't been possible to connect appears.
I've checked that I am allowing cookies with the IE Privacy setting. The link you gave confirms my browser is not accepting them!
Its so frustrating.
I did install some live Windows updates that came up last Wedesday. Maybe it was them?
It is only recently that Norton 360 and the cookie and the Messenger programs have started playing up!
Really frustrating!!!
Jason.
Clicked the Test button again on the link and it says cookies are enabled.
Went to this page...
clicked an option in the menu and it informs me cookies need to be set to enabled.
Other sites have done the same!

I clicked that link, and think I will provide some comment.
Most users clicking that link will see a RED message saying cookies are disabled. That is because the page you landed on is not the entended 'door' to that web site. (it would set a cookie, had you gone in through the front door I believe.) Users jumping to that page will need to click the TEST COOKIES button once to cause the website to set a cookie, at which point the red lettering will change to green lettering.
That page does have quite a little bit of good information about cookies in the explanation portion, for those who would like a primer.
Hello again Jason,
glad to see you found that the link needed the Test Cookies button to be clicked before the correct result is displayed.
You haven't confirmed if you have any other security type programs enabled ?
Do also check that Windows own Firewall has not been inadvertantly turned on.
Have you made any other changes such as started using a router perhaps or been into your routers setup page ...... is it possible you have Instant Messenger ports blocked in a router?
You can test if indeed Norton is the casue of Messenger and Yahoo not signing in by simply turning off the firewall part of the program temporarily;
open the program to main interface/settings/firewall protection/uncheck turn on firewall, apply/ok these changes
I would also suggest you clear temp files and cookies from within your browser .
In your IE browser, there is always the option to "reset web settings", this may clear up some of your browsing problems.
Thanks very much for all your help everyone.
It was a VERY simple problem. I'd seen it mentioned on some of the sites recommended too, but thought it just couldn't be that.
Yup, it was the computer date that was set wrong. I've corrected the date now Yahoo! and MSN messenger works and the site that require cookies to be enabled works too!
Unbelieveable.
Anyway, all works nicely. Thanks again for the help.
Jason.
Thanks for confirming your solution Jason ..... it can help others to know what you did to fix your particular problem.
