Have read numerous postings on this forum about renewing a subscription for NIS. Very confusing. Here are my questions.
Would like to retain my current NIS 2012 program and not go to NIS 2013 based on some comments. Have purchased a CD for NIS 2013 for a lot less than what it appears to cost to just renew the subscription: $19.95 for the NIS 2013 CD versus a renewal cost of $69.95 plus a $7.98 service charge. Chatting with a Norton tech, he indicated that the product key for the NIS 2013 will not work when retaining NIS 2012. However, some postings indicate that it will work, while others indicate it won't. Furthermore, some indicate that Norton chat techs will provide a new product key for NIS 2012. Of course, the ultimate question is why it is possible to purchase NIS 2013 for $19.95 and get the subscription for that cost, while renewal is so much more?
Thanks for the reply. I have since determined that my two desktop computers have been upgraded to NIS 2013. However, the laptop computer is running a NIS version of 19.3.0 et al, which I believe may be NIS 2011 or 2012. The reason that the laptop is running an earlier NIS version is because it would not accept the update. Norton tech people (several) could not resolve the issue even after numerous attempts. Consequently, they just reinstalled the old NIS version. Strange that the update would not install, but after removing the NIS version that was previously installed, this previous version could be re-installed without any problem. Now I am concerned that I will not be able to renew the subscription for the laptop while retaining this older NIS version. Any advice or suggestions?

You can still run on an older version with a renewed key or subscription, so you will still have protection.
As to why you cannot upgrade, have you ever had another security program installed on that computer? If so you need to fully remove it with the removal utility for that program. This could interfere with the upgrade.
You can also try downloading the installer for NIS2013 from here www.norton.com/nis20
Try running that installer to see if you get upgraded.
Never had a different anti-virus program on this computer. Not going to even try to do an upgrade since Norton techs could not get NIS 2013 to initialize even after spending several hours on the computer. BTW 3 different Norton techs made attempts, while spending numerous hours over 3 days. Even attempted a repair of the OS. The last one finally gave up. As mentioned previously, the previous version of NIS was removed from the laptop during the upgrade attempts. The Norton tech person had no problem reinstalling NIS 2012 thereafter. My plans are to just keep using NIS 2012 on this computer.
If you do want to try something else, as crazy as it seems, the video drivers can cause strange issues with Norton products.
Verify from the laptop manufacturer's site that you have the latest drivers for your graphics hardware. This has fixed many seemingly unrelated issues.
