CPU Usage

I have an issue with Norton, it is always running at exactly 28.5% CPU usuage and very high power usuage.
It does not matter if I restart or let it sit for a week, it is always 28.5, how do I fix that? Why is is using so much of the cpu all the time?

@Phunction Use the repair setting shown below. Lets see if that helps with the issue.

Tried that, but 0 change, it is really weird tha it is always exaclty 28.5%

These are the processes running at idle on my HP laptop. Its on the latest build as of early this morning. Does yours look similar in Task Manager under processes? What is the version and build of Norton as installed?

SA

SImilar, most are at 0% except the one:

Latest version

You have Norton Tools active which I did not on my install. Do you have any other Norton software running in the background like Driver Updater, or Software Updater as examples? If so disable that snake oil and restart/recheck.

I never turned that on, and I can’t find any information on how to turn it off. What does it do anyway? The last norton tools I used was years ago and it had things like defragment, hdd scanning, etc

Just checking for those two addon’s when you got Norton. They are NOT needed. Regarding what utilities you had installed earlier. Are those still installed and run in the background maybe? Norton tools is a normal process in the new versions but shouldn’t be running all the time. Check for older Norton programs installed if you would.

Same problem here on 3 computers. 100 % usage and norton GUI since 30.06.2025. Repairing, new install help for about 2 days, then the crashes come back. Please repair this problem.

The only thing I installed on this syetem was Norton 360.

Is there a way to remove the tools or turn it off?

Well, even after disabling pretty much everything in Norton settings, it makes no difference.
After spending a lot of time on chat and phone support, the conclusion was that it was normal.
Really? Even after disabling everything? What is it possibly doing to take a 1/3 of my cpu when everything is turned off?

I guess I will just have to try another vendor after my license expires.

That Norton Tools process appears to be baked into the software regarding Utilities Ultimate. N360 does have that addon present in Smart Scan. Look for a folder in your user program data directory, delete it and reboot. I’m not on version 25.xx at the moment with the computer I am using so I cannot directly check. Just look for and find any Avast folder(s) and remove them.

I’m only running the basic N360 on my Win 10 22H2 system, and I also have the Norton Antivirus > Norton Tools in my task manager. It seems to be a standard part of V25. I also saw this spiking my CPU and I was not able to kill the process in the task manager. It seemed to kick in during ‘idle time’, pointing towards some sort of hidden task. When it kicked in, I was unable to restart or reboot as it would lock my system.

As mentioned in other threads, a reinstall has fixed my issue so far, but it’s still been less than a week.

BUT, the NORTON TOOLS in the task manager appears to be a standard function of the V25 users.
