Like many others, I recently (Friday morning 8/21/09) began getting many (most/all?) of the problems listed when I got updated to 16.7.2.10:
first problem:
-Error "8506,430" after you install a Norton 2009 product
following problems (after I thought I solved problem #1):
-- Symantec Service Framework Error (causing NIS 2009 to shutdown--the systray icon disappeared as did the 2 instances of ccsvchst.exe in task manager)
-- Runtime Error on Outlook Express
--dead desktop icon
--opening NIS with right click causing 'one click support' to pop-up
--error on 'one click support' saying that I am a beta tester, but don't have the error reporting tool downloaded
After repeated rebootings I finally did a google search for "Symantec service framework error" and found alot of others were experiencing similar problems.
I downloaded the update Saturday morning (8/22/09) (the "free update" one on the Norton Update Center under "support" ). Everything 'appeared' to go fine until I restarted the computer as directed. There was not only no Norton icon in the systems tray, there was no desktop icon, nothing under "programs", no "ccsvchst.exe" in the task manager. It seemed everything Norton-related was gone. Note: I downloaded the update from the update center. I did not run the removal tool.
I had my old NIS 2008 disk nearby and reinstalled everything. Upon doing that, I ended up with 5 instances of ccsvchst.exe in task manager. I had to keep an appt, so I restarted the computer and left. When I returned, I had the NIS 2009 icon in the systray, but the version of NIS that I currently have is 2.0. The dashboard is also my old NIS 2008 (not the upgraded NIS 2009 dashboard). I am now back to only 2 instances of ccsvchst.exe in task manager and everything appears okay (no errors or crashes).
This evening I got a prompt from the Norton Update info center that a 'new version of NIS' is available. This is the same notice iirc that got me from NIS 2008 to NIS 2009 16.5.0.135.
MY QUESTION IS: GIVEN ALL THE PROBLEMS I AND OTHERS HAVE BEEN HAVING, SHOULD I WAIT BEFORE DOWNLOADING THE UPDATE AS PROMPTED OR ARE THE ISSUES NOW FULLY RESOLVED? I do not want to have to update from NIS 2008 to NIS 2009 only to have to remove it and reinstall 2008.
I am not a techie. I just want a simple answer to what I feel is a simple question--is it 'safe' to proceed with an update yet?
(BTW--I am running XP SP2 and have Google Chrome as my default browser.)
TIA.
