Currently have NAV, want to upgrade to NIS, how?

I am currently running Norton Antivirus, and just bought NIS 2011, it is in 'mynortonaccount' waiting to be downloaded.

How do I do this? Do I uninstall NAV first, then do the NIS download? Or just install NIS over the NAV?

The NAV still has about 100 days of subscription left, will those be lost? Or will they be added to the NIS subscription? I have Product Keys and Serial Numbers for both products.

-Hank

You will need to uninstall NAV completely before installing NIS.  You will lose the days on NAV.  If you can wait until just before the subscription runs out, that would be the best way for you to go.

Hello hboter

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum

I would first download NIS 2011 and save it to your desktop. If you install NIS 2011 now, you will lose any remaining days of NAV subscription. You could wait till your NAV sub is almost up or do it now. Perhaps a calll to customer service might result in them adding on the remaining days to your NIS 2011 sub, but no guarantees about that.

http://us.norton.com/support/contact/contact.jsp?pvid=cs

This is the link for US/Can. If you need a different location, please consult your local Symantec site for the local free chat customer support link.

You would have to remove NAV using the control panel method and then reboot. At his point, stay off the net until you have NIS 2011 installed and asking to be activated. I would recommend that you also use the Norton Removal Tool but please be aware that the tool will remove all norton products. Please run the tool twice with a reboot after each run of it.

You can download the Norton Removal tool from

http://www.symantec.com/symnrt

Please pick the proper Norton product that you want to remove. Also please be aware that it will remove all Norton products, . Also please have your product key handy.

Thank you Allen for new link

You are now ready to install NIS 2011 and can get back on the net when it wants to be activated. Please insert the new key for NIS 2011 and also remember to run live update until you get all updates and then reboot one more time.

I would give customer support a call and see if they might add on the remaining days to your NIS 2011 since you are actually upgrading the product. No guarantees that they will do it, but give it a try.

Please come back and let us know how you made out. Thanks.

Good day, me again, before I start just want to clarify something.

In addition to the NAV already installed, I also use the following

Zone Alarm free version

Malware Bytes Anti-Malware free version

Ad-Aware free version

(do you see a pattern here)

I also use Piriform's CCleaner and Defraggler every week or so.

With NIS I am assuming I can get rid of the Zone Alarm, how about the Mbam and Adaware? If I keep those two for extra security will they still run, or will there be some sort of conflict with NIS? Does NIS duplicate what they do? Should I just get rid of them also?

I am assuming the Piriform products will still work fine

Thanks

-Hank

Hi hboter:

You are correct that you will need to remove Zonealarm.  Malwarebytes is fine.  Adaware free version now has real time scanning, so it is also not compatible.  Superantispyware free version is  a good ride along as well.

I use Ccleaner as well, although not often and judiciously.  There is nothing wrong with Defraggler.  NIS has an optimization component that uses Windows defragger.  You may want to disable optimization so that you are not slowing your system down with constant defragging.

Hello hboter

I would like to add that you should remove those programs mentioned as conflicting before you install NIS 2011 and to use the proper removal tools for those programs if they do exist. I know there is one for Zone Alarm and you may have to run them twice to get rid of everything with a reboot afterwards. Thanks.

I want to do the first NIS install on an older computer that we use, prior to installing on the NAV computer.  This older one was formerly my wife's work computer, purchased by her for logging into work from home, and loaded by her company with work related software. This has been some time ago, they have long since upgraded to newer PCs, but we still have the old one.

To get to the point, one of the old programs is Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition, 2002 edition. It is program version 8.0.1.429, scan engine 4.1.022, if that means anything. It still downloads virus updates from somewhere when I do the update function, but I don't know how well this program is performing, given its age. This is one reason I want to install NIS on this one.

Couple of questions, I have the Norton Removal Tool, will it work on this old Symantec product? Or do I use the Control Panel / Remove Programs method? Or both?

I have also removed Zone Alarm, Spybot, and Adaware from this PC using the Control Panel / Remove Programs method. I also used the Zone Alarm removal tool a couple times with reboots between, I noticed it does not do a very good job, there is still a Zone Alarm folder inside C:/Program Files, also a Spybot folder. Also, I ran a program called Hijack This that I found out about, it also shows several Zone Alarm line items in the registry that are still there.

I want to get rid of these programs before installing NIS to avoid crashes or conflicts. Once they have been Control Panel uninstalled, is it safe to delete their  folders from C:/Program Files? and also delete the lines from Hijack This that show Zone Alarm? Did not see anything obvious from Spybot or Adaware in the registry.

This registry clean up thing in Hijack This is a little scary. I don't want to do something stupid and get some sort of blue screen. There are a lot of Symantec lines in registry also, I assume the Control Panel uninstall won't clear away all of them either.

There are apparently forums where you can post your Hijack This log and have gurus look it over and tell you what can be removed. Once I do the Control Panel uninstalls and run removal tools, would it make sense to post one of these logs to see what is left that needs to be deleted? Can that be done in this forum? I just want to remove as much as I can to make sure NIS installs and runs with no hiccups

Hi Hank,

A couple of things I want to suggest based on your latest update. For the Symantec Corporate Antivirus I would suggest that you post a topic in the business forum as most of us here do not have enough experience to guide you on proper removal of this. The obvious is to definitely uninstall the Corporate AV via Control Panel but I don't know if they have some sort of removal tool for this. The removal tool we use for consumer versions of Norton products will not likely do anything to remove a Corporate product.

One of the problems I have with virtually 100% of the software out there is that when you uninstall they leave junk in the registry and sometimes files. Even removal tools sometimes tend to leave a bit behind but in that case anything left behind should be harmless. I would not recommend manually editing the registry or anything to remove these entries.

However you might want to consider registry tools such as Norton Utilities or CCleaner among many others out there which can locate a lot of these obsolete entries and clean the registry up some. If you use such a tool be sure to create a system restore point in case the tool removes or modifies something it should not.

An even better strategy is to use an imaging backup program like Norton Ghost or some other one to do a complete image level backup of your system. With this type of backup you can restore your entire OS, programs and everything if necessary without having to reinstall the OS or any of your programs.

Anything left behind in the program directory such as in the Program Files path is completely safe to remove once you have uninstalled the software. However be careful not to delete program related files in shared library areas such as in the Windows directory, etc.

Logs can be posted using the Add Attachment link at the bottom of the reply editor. Images can be posted by clicking on the  symbol at the top of the reply editor.

Hope this helps a bit.

Best wishes.

Allen

I would first download NIS 2011 and save it to your desktop.........

You would have to remove NAV using the control panel method and then reboot. At his point, stay off the net until you have NIS 2011 installed and asking to be activated. ........

You are now ready to install NIS 2011 and can get back on the net when it wants to be activated........

My page on mynortonaccount.com showed the purchase of NIS, it also said Never Downloaded, and had a Download button. So I pushed the Download  button and downloaded something called NISDownloader.exe, about 390 Kb.

So now I have NISDownloader.exe file on my computer, do I go ahead and pull the Ethernet cable, remove any old antivirus, and then run the .exe file? Is this the actual NIS program that will be set up as a result, and afterwards just plug back into the Internet to activate, as mentioned above?

Or is Downloader.exe just some sort of wizard and not really NIS itself, and require an Internet connection to download and run the "real" NIS? In that case will I need to link to the Internet minus Antivirus in order for the Downloader to reach back to Norton and download and install NIS?

If the second is true, is there a way to download the actual NIS .exe file, so that it is installed and up before I plug back in to activate?

When I look at mynortonaccount.com it still shows Never Downloaded. That's why I wonder if I downloaded the actual NIS. Does this change only after activation?

Thank you

That little file you have is just a downloader.  If you disconnect from the internet your not going to be able to download the product.

Download the whole thing from floplot's post #3.

I'll edit this post in a few minutes with instructions on how to remove ZoneAlarm properly

Dave

Edit- to completely remove ZoneAlarm.

First download this file "cpes_clean.exe"

http://www.zonealarm.com.au/main/kb_display.asp?KBID=1870

If you have the settings password protected, turn that feature off.

Open up ZA and go to: Overview> Preferences

Uncheck the box "Load ZoneAlarm at startup"

Reboot your system and verify that ZA is not loaded in the system tray.

Go into your start menu and under Programs> ZoneAlarm find the uninstaller.

Right click on the uninstaller and select "properties"

Find the line that says "Target" it will say something like this:

"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe"

At the end of that line add one space and then /clean so it looks like this:

D:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe" /clean

Click apply and then OK.

Run the uninstaller and when it tells you your requesting a clean uninstall, click yes or OK.

Reboot the system and run the cleanup tool, then reboot again.

The cleanup tool shouldn't be necessary at that point but it won't hurt anything.

Hello

After using the Zone Alarm Removal tool, I would still do a search for any left over folders and files for Zone Alarm. Even after doing what was just suggested, I still found remnants of Zone Alarm.

Here once again is the direct link for NIS 2011. You can use this instead of that downloader. If you download and save this link on your desktop, then you can run it while disconnected until it wants to connect again. Then you can enter your new key and run live update to get all of the updates and then reboot once more.

Please run live update until no more updates and then reboot.

Please come back and let us know how you made out. Thanks.
