I received a dark web monitoring email - went to check it out on Norton’s website and found I had actually had two alerts today but only one was sent via email.
However my issue was that despite the website clearly stating ….For security reasons, we do not display your entire password. Once we verify that the email address listed below belongs to you, your password will be partially unmasked and displayed. Both of the alerts were showing my email and complete passwords. In the past I know I have only seen a partial password with asterisks to obscure some of the password.
Why is it so hard to get someone to understand this!! Tried the chats, given a helpline number, called and waited then could hardly hear the agent and she could not understand what I was trying to explain, sent on to another agent on the phone. Again it was difficult to explain what I was trying to get across as I just kept getting told to change my password and never reveal it to anyone etc. These were old passwords I no longer use anyway.
I am not sure even now that I managed to explain the issue, there may have been a language barrier not helped by the very very noisy background chatter so that I could hardly hear the agent talking. It is perhaps more helpful to have the entire password shown on these alerts but the partial reveal is no doubt a security thing in case those revealed passwords are still being used. I just wanted to flag up that entire passwords were being shown and there website actually says only partial ones will be shown!!
