I have noticed via a 'netstat -a' command that 'deploy.akamaitechnologies.com' is downloading something to my computer everything time I connect to the Internet under the svchost.exe process. This is without opening any Internet app like IE or Outlook and it is consuming about 50% of my Internet bandwidth and causing my ISP monthly charges to be higher than expected. I have even temporarily turned off the Windows Update and Nortons 360 updates, but it still occurs. I have blocked this FQDN from my computer via Windows Firewall and also tried Nortons 360, but it still gets through. Googling 'deploy.akamaitechnologies.com' mentioned that some ISP's and Microsoft sometimes uses this hosting company to assist with downloads. My ISP informed me that they don't use them, so does anyone know if MS use it? If so, how can I turn it off?
Hi Cosmo,
Let us know which version of Norton 360 you use. I think, LiveUpdate also use Akamai servers. If you are using the latest version- Norton 360 3.0, make sure that you disable both Automatic LiveUpdate and Pulse Updates.
Yogesh
Yes, I am using the latest version.
Just to be 100% sure, would you informing me how to turn these two N360 features off?
You can find detailed instructions on the following thread:

Microsoft do use it - an Internet Explorer Add-on (ActiveX Control) called 'DLM Control' from Akamai Technologies was installed by Microsoft to assist with downloading the Windows 7 RC if you wanted to try it out. Do you have this Add-on installed under Internet Explorer (check under Tools>Manage Add-ons under IE8). If you have this control installed and enabled, try 'disabling' it.. Typically though, you'd see this control as an icon on your taskbar if it's active.
Have you recently tried to download any software from Microsoft?
BTW, what OS are you using and what version of Internet Explorer?
Thanks for your continued support :-)
My PC is XP SP3 running IE8 without the 'DLM Control' Snap-on loaded.
Therefotre, I disabled all the other 12 Manage Snap-ons, except for Norton N360's which are still running. But the **bleep** ''deploy.akamaitechnologies.com'' still appears.
Would you know how to turn this feature off on IE8?
- Open IE8.
- Select Tools > Manage Add-ons.
- In the 'Show' drop-down box, select 'Downloaded controls'.
- If the 'DLM Control' is installed, you will see it listed here. If it's Status is 'Enabled', select the 'DLM Control' entry and click Disable.
I've had a look and it's not mentioned there. So it must be some other process using this download manager, but what??
Hi Cosmo
Many companies use that download manager. One of them is Adobe. If you have any adobe products on your computer which you probably do have, that may be the source of your problem. Programs that download large files like Netflix.
