Desktop PC Won't finish bootup after install

Hi All,

Windows XP Home 32 bit SP3---nis2010 version # 17.6.0.32---I'll try to list everything i see happening.I have tried installing in Safe Mode--Safe Mode with Networking & normal Windows Startup at least 7 times----Install goes fine, updates go well--even though the version listed isn't 17.7 ?---restart prompted after install OK.  Shut System down after that & I'm sunk. Pc won't finish bootup--Open task Manager to find no user listed---no icon in system tray on desktop---no "ccsvchst.exe" System or User. There appears to be about 4-5 processes missing in Task Manager. This is My 1st post so please bear with me,thanks in advance for any help.

I've watched the discussions hoping to find a fix,but no joy yet.   This was an upgrade from Norton SystemWorks 2003 & i used the product removal provided.

I actually uninstalled NIS 2010 & downloaded the 2011 Beta & it did exactly the same thing to me.

                                                                                                                                                                                      Thanks, Roger

Thanks Vineeth for the quick reply.  I found  a 2 meg. program leftover from the 2003 Systemworks called "Symantec Live Reg"---removed it & ran a search for all Norton/Symantec files on my Pc---the only one left is my product key.I left that. Anything else i can try before i give the 2010 version another shot ? I've never had to resort to a "Safe Mode" install for anything before. Anyone recomend this ?:smileyindifferent:

Hello prov1

Did you use the correct removal tool for system works 2003? The current Norton Removal Tool won't do the job. Please take a look at this link. Don't use the part that gives instructions for reinstalling your product.

http://service1.symantec.com/support/nsw.nsf/docid/2001091013435207

Also, since you had such an old product previously, does your computer meet the minimum requirements for your 2010 product? Do you have any other real time security programs installed now? Is there a possibility that you already have malware installed in your computer?

What operating system and service pack are you using now please?

I suggest you to delete the reboot key (if present) from Registry before you install the Norton product. Make sure that you take a backup of registry before you delete the key. You can find the steps to backup your registry in the following Microsoft article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

After you backup the registry, follow these steps:

Click Start > Run.

In the Run dialog box, type regedit, and then click OK.

Navigate to the following entry in registry, and then delete it:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Norton\Reboot

Exit registry.

Then download and run the Norton Removal Tool one more time from the link www.symantec.com/symnrt

You can install the Norton product either in Safe mode or in normal mode.

Hi,

My System is listed in my 1st post----I've upgraded & doubled memory---larger power supply---newer video card---all my updates done. P/c runs anything i want except this product.

I did use the uninstall for 2003 provided with it. Just looked at the thread you provided & downloaded the tool.  I'll run it & see what gives:smileywink:

Not that I would ever doupt 2 symantec articles.

But having done this in the past on several systems I found that the norton removal tool does not work for system works 2003.

The tool that worked. (at least for me) was called "symclean".

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nsw.nsf/0/ec5913cd3e703d03652572070025cfc5?OpenDocument

The download link does not work and it's also very possible that they changed the removal tool over the last few years to be able to remove 2003 versions.

Thank you for reporting this DaveH!! We will be correcting the link in that document soon.

Meanwhile you can download the SymClean tool from the following link:

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/products/norton_systemworks/ver5.0/tools/SYMCLEAN.EXE

Ran "regedit" reboot was found in a little deeper--in the uninstall folder ??? Nothing was in "Reboot "----

You can delete the Reboot key itself. Make sure that you have taken the backup of registry. Then try to install the Norton product and let us know the result.

Ran Symclean----said to proceed with install. I'll try it after supper , Thanks all. Progress report to follow.

Hello Again,

After overnight shutdown--tried to reboot this morning same situation as described earlier. Did an uninstall--ran removal tool---ran symclean---did search for noton /symantec files---went into registry & found only 2 keys under norton entry---one says uninstall, the other says Identifiers. As you would know during the uninstall process the pc finishes booting & internet explorer, outlook express & any other item i tried earlier opens fine.  I have a version of Spybot & AdAware on my system---but not running, would this not allow NIS2010 to work ?

Thanks for the help & am open to any further suggestions.                   Roger

Also after all updates---version 17.6.0.32 is all i have .

Forgot to mention--last night before shutting down i ran a Quick Scan & only a few tracking cookies were found---let Nis2010 "fix" them.:smileyindifferent:

Hello prov1

If you have spybot installed with tea timer enabled, that will interfere with your Norton product. It will prevent the registry from being cleaned as it should be cleaned and may prevent NIS from doing some things.

I would suggest running HiJackThis to see if there is something that may show up there that may be causing your problem.

Please download HiJackThis from http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/ Choose the executable and save it on your desktop. Run the file and select the first option on the main menu "Do a system scan and save a log file". When this is finished, Notepad will open with the log file in it. Save the log file and attach it to a post here via the Add Attachments Please don't attempt to fix anything that it shows until someone checks out the log. Thanks.

Please come back and post the log. Thanks.

Hi,  Ran "HiJack"  ,here's the logfile--thanks.

You can try to fix these. You can also try Norton Power Eraser tool mentioned in this page:

http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/DIY/index.j sp

Then install your Norton product, and let us know the results.

Hello Yogesh

Thank you for checking out the HiJackThis log.

Hi Yogesh---I just let HiJack This fix/remove the list you suggested. Rescan showed they were gone. I'm off to reinstall---maybe the 8th try will be the charm.  Progress  will be posted--Thanks again.   Roger

No luck---installed +all updates---same version listed in 1st post & same symptoms. Tried 4 reboots, none completed. Uninstalled product so i could post. Ran removal & symclean tools. I'll check back here for any ideas. Thanks for helping me.  Roger:smileysad:

Hello prov1

I noticed in your hijackthis log that you have an old version of acrobat. Have you updated your Java, and Adobe products and have you got rid of the older versions of these programs.? They get updated for security reasons. I don't know if having these older products would interfere.

I have a feeling that there is still something in your computer that is still interfering with NIS. Has your bios been updated perhaps or needs to be updated? I'm wondering if this isn't a hardware problem also some how?
