Diagnostic Report

Why does the NSwB Hardware Profile in Diagnostic Report show -1 MB for the Video Card RAM of the 4096 MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 video card?

Hi

When running the Diagnostic Report I get the following message:

Problem:  Your operating system may be missing key security or performance patches.

Recommendation:  Run Windows Update to make sure your computer has the latest security and performance patches.

I have Windows Update set to automatic anyway so I'm always up to date. Just ran it anyway and yes I am up to date.

Any ideas what it could be moaning about?

I have the latest version I believe? which is 3.8.0.41

I have Vista Home Basic Version 6.0 (Build 6002:Service Pack 2)

Thanks

I had the same problem, but it was resolved by setting Windows update to Automatic. Are you sure you have updates set to automatic? I would just check again to make sure.

How weird is that.

I thought that the setting I had for windows updates which is Download Updates But Let Me Choose Whether To Install Them was Automatic.

As it is there is the Install Updates Automatically which I now remember I used to have it set to but wanted to pick and choose what I actually wanted to install and not install.

The thing is I must have changed this a long time ago, but the report still worked OK. Why it is now starting to give the Operating message I have no ideas?

I just wish that the messages were a bit more user friendly and gave you a bit more information.

Thanks a lot  for you help.

Yes I agree the messages should be clearer. It should state that you need to have automatic updates set in order to get an accurate report. The message does seem a bit alarmist at first, and as there is no explanation you automatically assume there are some missing security updates when there isnt. Another thing I dont like is that you are unable to see what anti virus definitions you have just downloaded. Norton just says "your Norton product  now has the latest updates.

I would like the Diagnostic Report to be more advanced, such as be able to detect if your sound is not working, and if problems are found it should provide a Link for recommendations or to fix the problem.

Agree, this feature doesn't directly help user of it to make them able to quickly remedy the detected problems as it's now. This is a feature which could be greatly improved with automatic fixes, etc. and make N360, and the Norton family in general very unique and useful in the sense of repairing and supporting, etc.

I ran a diagnostic report and it says I have a lot of start up items and installed programs. My question is how do I know which ones to disable or remove without messing up the programs I need.

What does the Diagnost Report mean when it said that my CPU is slow.  Is it a hardware or software related problem?

Hi,
Not quite sure what you are trying to tell us. I'm not aware of any place where the Norton program evaluates your CPU for speed and rates it 'slow' I am aware of the feature which will warn you when you try to do one or more too many tasks at any one time and force heavy CPU usage.

Windows does have a feature which rates your system performance.

Dick,

N360 has a feature called Diagnost Report. You can read all about it here - https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?docid=v19648659_N360_N360RET_2013_en_us&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home&entsrc=redirect_pubweb&lg=en&ct=us

My destop has been running slow lately.  It takes at least 1 minute to open up any web browser.  I looked in Process Explorer and wuauclt.exe runs forever.  I killed that process and the stxcon.exe process.  I found ccsvchst.exe and a sub folder? another ccsvchst.exe running and left those alone.

I then booted into the safe mode and ran the antivirus (2 hours).  Nothing.  I even got that 3048.3? message and told me to run Power Eraser and found nothing.  I did a Puran defrag.  I  ran the N360 diagnostic manager and it said that  I no longer had any network connections and that my CPU is slow.  ( I used to have 30 precesses running, now I have 13,  and N360 says my CPU is slow.

So:

1. what does it mean by CPU is slow with only 13 processes running,

2. why was my computer slow open up browsers,

3.  What is with the 3048.? message when Power Eraser found nothing.

4.  Why did I lose 17 proceses and my network connections?

Hi Drizzt,

I'm no expert, but it could be that you have an infection.  I can only recommend waiting for our resident malware removalist, Quads, to read your post. Please be very patient and please don't try running any scans or try to fix this on your own.

Dave

I forgot my ALL PROGRAMS list is  now smaller on the screen. and only 1 of my Mahjong games run.  Microsoft Words looks OK.

I hope to hear from Quads.

However if it is an infection, how is it that Norton 360, Norton Power Eraser, Malwarebytes, and Windows Defender scans conitnually missed it for weeks?  Yes they are updated.

Dave,
Switched to the test system with the current version of 360, updated. Still don't see anything that gives my CPU a rating of slow.

Maybe it's just old eyes. Help me out here :smileywink:

Thanks

Dick,

My guess would when you run Diagnostic Report and check under Hardware Profile it shows, along with other details, the CPU.  In my case it says Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz.  I am only guessing, but if Norton 360 considers the CPU as slow it might tell you.  A mate's old Vista machine running N360v6 gets a warning that he doesn't have enough RAM even though he has 2GB.

Krusty13,

How long will it take Quads find my post or do I need to send it to him somehow?

I can't speak for Quads, but I know he doesn't miss much, so I would guess he has already seen your post.

You said "... However if it is an infection, how is it that Norton 360, Norton Power Eraser, Malwarebytes, and Windows Defender scans conitnually missed it for weeks?  Yes they are updated."

If after running all these scans and nothing has been found it now seems much less likely to be an infection.  I hope Windows defender is not active as it may clash with N360 and at best will not help your protection, just slow your computer.

You have mentioned error 3048.3.

For this I would recommend uninstalling N360 and reinstalling.

You haven't mentioned which version of N360 you have.  Can you check for us by clicking Support > About? - We can then give you the best procedure to reinstall a fresh copy.

Thanks,

Dave
