Difference between installing from cdrom and downloading

I have Norton AV 2012.  I originally installed via cdrom which worked fine.  I had a system problem, so I reloaded the OS.  I downloaded Norton from my account and installed it just to see what happened.  The GUI is different, I assume AV 2013.  That's okay.  There were two other difference, however.  First, IdentitySafe was installed at the same time.  And second, a folder of some files was copied to my desktop.

Did I miss an option *not" to install IdentitySafe?  It was not loaded before via the cdrom.  I do not need it because I do not need to synchronize passwords across different devices.

What's up with the destop folder?  Was that another option I glossed over?

Everything works, I just want to understand the changes, as I tend to be called for system questions from relatives.
