Disable IE8 SmartScreen Filter with NIS2010?

Should the IE8 SmartScreen filter be disabled when using NIS 2010?  Do they conflict?  What's the latest guidance on this?

Hello car825

I would say to disable the IE 8 SmartScreen because it seems to do the same thing as the antiphising part of NIS does.

Why do you suppose that NIS 2010 does not does not disable the E8 SmartScreen filter the way it disables Windows Firewall?

Please read the information provided in the following thread:

Although the thread is for NIS 2009, it is applicable for NIS 2010 as well.

Thanks for the link.  One point is not completely clear.  Do you get any additional protection by leaving both on?

A Symantec employee named disker, in the other thread stated:

While it's not problematic to have both on, it is probably not the best user experience, as you may get double notifications (in the best situations) or conflicting notifications (in the worst) in which case of course my opinion is to turn off Smartscreen and just use the Norton toolbar.

Seems clear that in his/her opinion it would be best to turn off Smartscreen. I don't know if there is a security benefit to having them both on, it seems that if there was a definite benefit then Symantec employees would not recommend turing off Smartscreen. I hope this helps.

Does "conflicting notifications" mean that IE8 SmartScreen found something that NIS did not or vice versa? Why assume that IE8 SmartScreen is wrong?  I would not ignore Malwarebytes if it found something that NIS didn't.  I'm just trying to understand the difference.

Hello car

In my opinion, when ever you have 2 parts of different programs trying to do the same function, then there are bound to be conflicts which may result in less protection. To me, it's just like having to antivirus programs running at the same time or 2 antimalware programs running at the same time all the time. I don't think having 2 similar programs or parts of programs always running provides twice the protection. I'm not a Symantec employee, but that's just my opinion.

Ok I get the difference now.  The IE8 SmartScreen filter provides realtime protection and Malwarebytes (free) is on demand.  It's OK to get a second opinion from an on demand scanner but running two realtime programs is not a good idea. I'm still curious why NIS doesn't disable SmartScreen like it does Windows Firewall.  Same idea right?

Hi car825

I have been advised on this Forum that running Firefox Phishing filter will not conflict with NIS Phishing filter.

I have been advised and read numerous Topics related to IE8 Smart Screen on this Forum.  The weighty consensus falls to the conclusion disable IE8 Smart Screen Phishing Filter...

I have been advised the Firefox filter is a signature based filter while the IE8 and NIS filters are signature heuristics enhanced filters.  Based on info offered by this Forum I allow FF filter and disable IE8... maybe I sould disable FF... IDK

Forum quote:

In general it is never a good idea to have two real-time security applications in use simultaneously.  System performance can be adversely impacted and your protection can actually be lessened, as the two programs can seriously interfere with each other's proper functioning and blocking of malicious things that try to run on your PC.

****

Phishing filters I presume are security apps....and yet FF is OK and IE8 is not...maybe it's the heuristics.  Maybe it's that NIS Phishing filter integrates with Safe Web functions.

But, based on the advise offered > I allow FF Phishing filter and disable IE8 Smart Screen filter.
