Disable third party plug-ins for Internet Explorer

I just read on a (non-Microsoft) forum covering IE, advice given to a victim of a man-in-the-browser attack that raised serious doubts in my mind: Somebody suggested that he should disable third party browser extensions. Wouldn't that terminate the protection NIS provides while surfing the Internet?? I and my family run NIS 2012 on three machines. I don't want to do anything that will compromise the protection provided by NIS. NIS and earlier Norton products have saved our bacon many, many times over the past decade. Any comments, please?
