Disabling Idle Full System Scan

Hi Folks,

This is my very first post on this forum having just defected from a competitor's product, so - hello everyone!

I've now installed NIS2010 on three PCs and I am most impressed.

However, being new to Symantec products, I have a question. Is it possible to disable the idle full system scan that currently cuts in after 10 minutes of no mouse (or keyboard?) activity? I ask this because I participate in the World Community Grid (WCG) on one of my PCs. The combination of NIS and WCG running simultaneously places a heavy load on my well-aged Pentium 4 CPU causing it to run hotter than I'm happy with. That's why I'd like to disable the full system scan (and probably the quick scan), which runs when this PC is 'idle'.

Any advice would be most helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Hi jaypeecee

Welcome to Norton Forum !

You can disable idle full system scan by doing the following steps

1.Open Settings from NIS

2. In Computer Settings , under computer scans , there is a "IDLE TIME SCANS" setting. This is set to 'weekly' by default. Change this to 'Off' from the drop-down menu against the setting.

This will disable idle full system scan. Hope this helps !

Thanks

HI jaypeecee

Open NIS go into Settings and next to Idle Time Scans change the dropdown to off and then choose Apply

The idle quick scans are not affected by the setting and will continue to run whenever new virus definitions come down.  These scans take only seconds and should not bother your machine.

I recall Pentium IV's being referred to as an alternative room heating device.  :smileywink:

Hi jaypeecee,

Allow me to welcome you to the Norton Community and the Norton Family. :smileyhappy:

If you are going to disable the IDLE full system scan, you should set up a scheduled scan when you can decide when you want it to run. This will still keep the scanning automated but will be at a time of your own choosing.

To schedule a scan please click Scan Now -> Run Custom Scan from the main NIS window. The click on the Schedule button located to the right of where it says Full System Scan.

If you absolutely cannot run a scheduled scan either, then please make sure you run manual full scans occasionally. I would recommend once per week or more often if you desire.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes.

Allen

Hi Folks,

Well, what a wonderful welcome from so many people! I think I'm going to like it here. :smileyhappy:

And thanks for all your helpful feedback on which I will now act.

I had to chuckle at the comment  "I recall Pentium IV's being referred to as an alternative room heating device". Yes, this machine's days are numbered. It will be replaced soon(ish) by an Intel iCore 7- based machine running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. Quite a step-up, eh?

Once again, thanks everyone!

Hi JPC,

You are most welcome. :smileyhappy:

Please stop back and let us know how it goes.

Best wishes.

Hi Folks,

Sorry about the delay in replying. I've been otherwise engaged for the last few days and that may continue a little longer but, rest assured, I will report back.

Hi Folks,

Well, an Idle Full System Scan (IFSS) ran yesterday evening on my PC and the CPU temperature seemed to be OK. The World Community Grid (WCG) number-crunching was going on at the same time. So, at the moment, I am not inclined to disable IFSS but, should I need to do so, I now know what to do.

Once again, thank you for all the valuable feedback. I'm now a little bit wiser about NIS and I like this product.

Hello Allen,

Thanks for your valued comment.

There are two posts in particular that answered my original question. It would be unfair to pick just one. Does this forum allow me to select both posts or must I select only one? If so, it will have to be decided by tossing a coin!

Hi JPC,

Unfortunately the forum will only allow you to pick one.

Best wishes.
