Hi Cnon,

Just bear in mind that if you have more than one Norton product installed on your machine (for example Norton Ghost), then the Norton Removal Tool will delete all Norton products.

As mdturner said - run the Norton Removal Tool twice with a reboot after each run; rebooting should happen automatically. However, you can run the Norton Removal Tool directly, without going through the control panel (add/remove programs) first. There are various approaches to removing security software in general ;-)  Most security software vendors have their own removal tool because security software has to be very sticky in order to protect your computer adequately. I also suggest that you disconnect from the internet during the deinstallation process, as you will be without any security protection during this time. Also, if you still have an active subscription, it will continue to run (it will not freeze) after removing Norton until it expires.

Make sure to install your new security software as soon as possible afterwards.

Thanks.

I only have NIS 2009 installed.

Just curious, why do I need to run the removal twice, even after running the program's own uninstaller?

Of course I'll disconnect from the net first; I'm no newbie. :smileyhappy:

Thanks,

Cnon

Running the removal tool twice usually ensures a thorough deinstallation of Norton. While running the removal tool once is pretty thorough, it is better to run it twice to be on the safe side and make sure that as many Symantec/Norton folders and registry entries are cleaned up.

The inbuilt uninstallers of security programs generally tend to leave bits of themselves remaining in the registry which can interfere with the installation of new security software. The new security program might fail to install or run very slowly, freeze etc. in the case of unclean un/installations.

Cnon -

Actually, the only reason to run the Norton Removal Tool more than once was to correct a poorly installed Norton product.  The first time got most of the correct entries removed; the second time would remove the incorrectly installed entries that were "locked" by the proper parts of Norton but could not be removed due to improper installation.

If you run the uninstall from the Add / Remove Programs menu in the Control Panel and then scan your drives for any Norton / Symantec folders and the delete them, you can run the Norton Removal Tool to clear any remaining entries in the registry and your system should be clean then.  Running the Removal Tool is just insurance; the Installer in NIS2009 / NIS2010 products has been adjusted to do a great job of installing or uninstalling Norton on clean systems.
