Does NIS protect against ransomware?

I'm trying to get a simple yes/no answer this question: Does NIS protect against ransomware? I'm terrified of this and want to do whatever is necessary to protect against it.

Also, if anyone would care to answer, can ransomware and viruses in general infect external hard drives? I have multiple external drives connected to my computer with back ups of my files on all of them them. How much protection does that give me? If my computer became infected, and I disconnected the external drives, would my backed up files be OK or would it already be too late?

Is there a better backup system that will give me 100% protection that anyone can recommend?

How about Mozy--does that protect against ransomware and other viruses?

Thanks in advance to anyone who knows about this stuff and would take the time to answer.
