I just purchased the retail boxed version of NIS2009 and when I got home and was reading the fine print on the box, I found the statement:
"Email scanning supported for standard POP3 and SMTP compatible email clients"
Does this imply that if I have an MS Exchange or an IMAP account configured in my client (Outlook 2007), it won't scan or protect it? Within my client profile, I have several accounts configured, including POP, IMAP, and Exchange. All messages are one way or another downloaded to my local client (POP of course, and IMAP too, and the Exchange account is configured to use Cached Exchange Mode). What is or isn't scanned (sent and/or received messges) in any of these account types?
I need to know that everything is protected, or I'd have to find a different solution.
I’m not sure how a complete package can get away with not scanning IMAP traffic. I was about to buy the product but can’t use it without IMAP support. I use it both at home and at work so I can keep my mail in one location accessible from anywhere.
Even though the inbound/outbound e-mail is not scanned in your case, be advised that should you download an infected file and try to open it, the NIS 2009 real-time engine (auto-protect) will "kick in" and stop it in it's tracks!
Therefore, the inbound/outbound e-mail scans are just another layer of protection.
Hope this helps a bit.
NIS 2009 is really a great product.

Thanks for your extra info. I’m currently using KIS and I’ll consider it but I can’t see switching without support for IMAP (and SMTP) scanning to be safe. It’s so hard to evaluate products… but the detection rate on NIS seems to be very good. I was actually thinking of getting the Endpoint protection version for somie PC’s at the office. At the same time, not to get off topic but I was seeing some complaints that NIS wasn’t as stable. Not sure what to believe and I don’t like changing simply because all the hooks that get put in place by these programs that may not get ‘unhooked’ properly.
Wow, that really is surprising. Are there different clients that are provided to enterprise users, especially since there are so many MS Exchange-based systems? Or do they rely on server side tools? I can see how that might be ok, but to leave IMAP unprotected also??
I've got to have all three types protected, so I'm going to have to find a different solution. My unopened NIS2009 box is going back to the vendor.
