I've got Norton 360 on my pc which is licenced to protect up to 3 pcs. It was bundled with the pc when I bought it almost a year ago. I don't use any of the extra features and only have 1 pc to protect.
The renewal fee of £60 seems a bit OTT for my purposes. I can buy Norton Internet Security - for example - for £23 from Tesco. Would installing NIS in these circumstances present any problems?
Since you want to change to NIS 2011 instead of N360, I would suggest you first uninstall it using control panel and then use the Norton Removal Tool. I am suggesting the Norton Removal Tool because you are changing the type of program. Please be aware though, that the removal tool will remove all of your Norton products. Before you do remove N360, you can back up your Identity safe information if you use that feature of the program and then install it into your NIS 2011 program.
Please follow these instructions to save your Identity Safe information by creating NPM file.
Please pick the proper Norton product that you want to remove. Also please be aware that it will remove all Norton products, so back up Identity Safe using the program to back that up. Thank you Allen for new link
After you install your NIS 2011, please remember to run live update to get all the updates since the CD was made. Thanks.

Just one question - presumably my Pc will be vulnerable between uninstalling 360 and installing NIS. Should I install NIS from CD while disconnected from the internet, or does it need to be connected for the installation?
You can disconnect from the web and then connect when it wants to activate and run live updates if you want to. When you uninstall N360, the windows firewall should kick in until you get NIS 2011 installed. The install from what I hear is rather quick provided your computer doesn't have any malware on it or any other real time security programs running on it.
You could also download the NIS 2011 file from here and save it to your desktop. Then click on it to install and enter in your key to activate it.
As floplot suspects, the uninstall, cleanup, and reinstall is very quick and smooth. I don't bother disconnecting from the net for the time it takes. If you are behind a router, there is also less risk. As for most installatios of anything, make sure all other programs are closed.
