Download Intelligence not working

I have silent mode set to 'Off',  Download Intelligence set to 'On'.  When I download a file, I used to get a small pop-up

in the lower right corner telling me the file was safe.  I no longer get any pop-up.  Any help is appreciated.

Thank you.

Thanks for responding.  Yes. Download Insight Notifications is set to 'On'. I have tried setting Show Report on Launch of Files to both 'Unproven files only' and 'Always' without any success.

I am running  Norton Antivirus 19.2.0.10, Windows XP PRO/SP3.

I noticed there is no mention of a file download in the  'History' section.

Hi GreyGhost:

Insight Download will only provide pop-messages for executable files like software installers with a .exe extension.  Try performing a test download with the free CCleaner installer (ccsetup312.exe) from the Piriform site here - I just tried this myself and got a Norton pop-up a few seconds after the download was completed.

I checked my security history and all the entries under Internet | Download Insight say "Download Insight detected launch of..." so it doesn't appear that the actual downloads are logged in the history until the executable file is actually launched.

I downloaded CCleaner directly from Piriform.  Still no popup from Norton.  I had tried several downloads from MajorGeeks.com

without a popup from Norton.

Hi,

Are you downloading the files through browser? or using any download manager softwares?

I downloaded CCleaner directly from Piriform and I got the popup from Norton:

I am using Opera 11.52

Try the download using Internet Explorer or Firefox.

Opera is the only browser that works for me.  After all the updates, Fireox is no longer working.

Internet Explorer works sporadically.

From Norton help:

Norton AntiVirus provides the Download Intelligence option to let you configure the Download Insight feature. Download Insight provides information about the reputation of any executable file that you download from the supported portals. The reputation details indicate whether the downloaded file is safe to install. You can use these details to decide the action that you want to take on the file.
Some of the supported portals are:

Internet Explorer (Browser)

Opera (Browser)

Yahoo (Browser)

Firefox (Browser)

Chrome (Browser)

AOL (Browser)

Safari (Browser)

QQ (Chat)

MSN Messenger (Chat)

ICQ (Chat)

Skype (Chat)

Yahoo Messenger (Chat)

MSN Explorer (Browser, E-mail & Chat)

Outlook (E-mail)

Thunderbird (E-mail)

What do you mean? Can you be more specific? It may be not a Norton problem.

Hi,

The info you had provided is absolutely right. But the File insight analyzes the files while saving for the portal type 1, Opera belongs to portal type 2 which means while executing only the file will be analyzed and the file insight will give notification when the file is malicious or not.

Internet Explorer (Browser) 1

Opera (Browser) 2

Yahoo (Browser)

Firefox (Browser) 1

Chrome (Browser) 1

AOL (Browser) 1

Safari (Browser) 1

QQ (Chat) 2

MSN Messenger (Chat) 1

ICQ (Chat) 2

Skype (Chat) 2

Yahoo Messenger (Chat) 2

MSN Explorer (Browser, E-mail & Chat) 1

Outlook (E-mail) 2

Thunderbird (E-mail) 2

I can no longer play video with either Firefox or IE. They continually ask me to install Flash even though it is installed.

Try using google chrome which will use its inbuilt plugins to play videos.

Subash,

So you're saying portal type 2 is only analyzed on execution, not downloading?

Yes that is correct.

The execution is appearing in security history so Norton is monitoring it with Insight.  Just no pop-up.

Yes, if it is a malicious file according to the file insight it will give the pop-up.

I consider my issue solved.  Many thanks to Subash, noghere, and Imacri for their help.

Glad to hear that. See you around. Happy thanksgiving:robotvery-happy:
