Download NIS 2010 Without Norton Download Manager

As a NIS 2009 user with a current subscription, I am entitled to update to NIS 2010. The Norton Update Center wants me to install the Norton Download Manager, which will then automatically install NIS 2010. That's not what I want to do.

I want to download the installer for NIS 2010 and install it on my own. Can that be done? I'm thinking of installing the 30-day trial version of NIS 2010 and then registering it with my NIS 2009 product key. Will that work?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, it should, but I don't see the point.  If it's the installer that you want, the downloader will actual create one for you and place a link to it on your desktop.

Just to satisfy my curiosity, why don't you want the downloader initiating the installation (which, after downloading the correct installer, is virtually all it does)?  You could always cancel the installation when it starts; and that should leave you with the installer.

Hi mijcar:

If I have the actual installer, I can install or re-install the program without needing to go online. I plan to burn the installer to a CD, along with a text file containing my license information, to have a backup copy. I do this with all downloaded installers.

What's the big deal? So many software organizations allow licencees to download the actual installer...I don't see why Symantec has to be different.

I figured that out, BD, but my point was that once you've downloaded it, you get the installer with it and you can use it just as you want.  Symantec's not stopping you; no one is.  Make your backup copy of the installer straight from your computer.

Trial versions now seem to require opt-out credit cards, which can be a real hassle.  Wouldn't downloading it once via the downloader be much easier?

I was not aware that the Update Center would leave the installer on my computer. There is no wording to that effect (that I could find) at the Update Center, which says only that the Norton Download Manager will automatically install the program. I’ll give it a try and report back.

The most straightforward way to obtain the full installation package of NIS 2010 is to download it from here:

http://www.norton.com/nis10

You can back it up on a flash drive or external hard disk, too, if you want, to be on the safe side :-)

Well, I just had the best software upgrade experience ever. Here's what happened:

I downloaded the Norton Removal Tool and used it to uninstall NIS 2009 (as recommended by the Symantec knowledgebase.) Everything went smoothly. After restarting my computer, a webpage appeared, asking if I wanted to download the latest version of NIS! I downloaded the installer (the same one I would have received by clicking on the link Yaso_Kuuhl provided) and started the installation, which went off quickly and easily. Then, another webpage appeared to remind me to run Live Update. The whole process could not have been easier.

Follow-ups:

1. You need to provide a credit card number to get the 30-day trial, and while that would have worked out fine in the end, once I explained to someone that I already had a valid license, the procedure above was much faster.

2. I didn't go through the Norton Update Center, so I didn't get to use the Norton Download Manager.

For years I was a confirmed Norton hater. I had a very positive experience with NIS 2009 and I wondered: Could lightning strike twice? It did! Now I'm a Norton admirer.

I've been trying to renew my Norton subscription today, through the "Express Renewal" popup. I purchased the NIS package and tried downloading it, however it only gives me the error message "Another download manager is currently running. Please wait for it to finish and try again."

Unless I'm misunderstanding what you day in your Subject and text .... you won't download 2010 version by using any of the automatic prompts either on line or in the User Interface of the program when running. On the webpages I am fairly certain that you will get the current version downloaded even if you answer the question of what you are running by entering 2010 ...

Did you actually want to download and install an older version? If so I think someone can give you a link and it should be one that avoids the Download Manager / Automatic install as you download ..... Although I have recently found that working very well on the current version.

Can you clarify please.  Also if you are not in the USA and want a local version please say so.

Nikhil_CV: I just tried it again and the two icons aren't showing up, nor is there a process being started by that name in the Task Manager.

Huwyngr: When I clicked the Express Renewal button, I was linked to an online page with three options: Antivrus, Internet Security, and one other one.. honestly don't remember what it was. At any rate, I decided to go with the IS, it said I was using the plain AV. When I purchased and downloaded it, it was having the problems. I don't know if it's because I upgraded to IS, had an older version, or what, but I still haven't been able to get it to work.

I tried downloading a trial version to see if that worked yesterday- it appears to have uninstalled what I had and I can't open it (clicking the Norton button my desktop does nothing).

I am US by the way.

Hi,

Are you using an normal user account or administrator account?

Did you download the NISDownloader.exe file from updatecenter.norton.com?

Have you restarted or cold booted after you have experienced the problem?

Do you have a valid key for NIS (you can retrive it from norton account)?

Did you uninstall NAV before installing NIS using NRNR or NRT?

Please follow these steps correctly and sequentially:

  1. Download a fresh trial version of NIS from norton website ( not from your management account) or use a disc if you bought retail version, not the online one.
  2. Now close all programs and disconnect from network.
  3. Run CCleaner and perform cleaning. (Make sure you scanned for 'Cleaner' and 'Registry') Check all options are ticked in 'Registry' section and Options as shown in pic is selected in 'Cleaner section'Capture.JPG)
  4. Restart the system
  5. Uninstall NIS with NRT opting for nothing to be left back (If NIS currently exists in your system, else skip steps 5 & 6)
  6. Run CCleaner again
  7. Shut down your system.
  8. Power it OFF or unplug Battery
  9. Power it ON or plug batterry back after 15 seconds
  10. Turn th system ON or boot the system
  11. Run CCleaner for 'Cleaner' and 'Registry'
  12. Now execute the downloaded or disc NIS Setup.
  13. Let the installation complete. Do not connect to network untill specified!
  14. Run CCleaner again
  15. Now Perform the shutdown-boot-up process said in step 7 to step 10
  16. Open NIS and see if it shows that its running trial version. (Showing only  30-days for expiry)

Now try to update NIS connecting to network and the go to updatecenter.norton.com -> Choose my product manually -> Select NIS ver 20 from list -> proceed to download.

Update us regarding this

While not doubting Nikhil_Cv's advice is good, I'd caution against ticking the registry cleaner options, unless you know exactly what you're doing.

CCleaner is a good program and has the option to take a backup of of what you've done, but deleting registry items CAN be problematic, especially if they are critical files.
