Currently I have McAfee on my computer but I’d like to switch to Norton Internet Security. Do I download Norton first THEN uninstall McAfee or do I uninstall McAfee first before downloading and installing Norton? If I uninstall first, wouldn’t my computer be unprotected while I’m online downloading? Thanks.
Hi leushino,
Here are the instructions:
Removing McAfee & installing Norton Internet Security 2010
Preparatory steps: keep Norton account information (username and password) and Norton Internet Security product key ready. You can fetch your key from your Norton account over here:
https://www.mynortonaccount.com/amsweb/default.do
-Go to the following link to download the Norton Internet Security 2010 installation package:
Save the NIS 2010 package to desktop. Do not run it as yet.
Removing McAfee:
-First, download McAfee removal tool to get rid of remaining McAfee entries in the registry after going through the first steps via control panel. Go to the following link to download the appropriate removal tool for your McAfee product and read the tool instructions:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507
-Do not run the tool as yet! Just save it to the desktop!
-Disconnect from the internet. Do not go on the internet now. Close any open windows and programs. Disable any other security software you may have (e.g. Windows Defender. Note: it is strongly recommended not to run two real-time security programs together on one machine)
-Go to start - control panel – programs and features – deinstall McAfee. Reboot (should happen automatically). After reboot, go to programs and features again and see if any McAfee components are still listed. If there are, deinstall them and reboot computer.
-Run the McAfee removal tool by right-clicking on the icon and choosing “run as administrator”. (in Vista).
-Reboot (this should happen automatically; if this is not the case, reboot manually).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Installing Norton Internet Security 2010:
-Close any open windows and programs.
-Right-click on the NIS 2010 icon on the desktop; select “run as administrator” (in Vista). NIS will install. When it asks you for your product key or wants to connect to the web, plug the internet cable back in and type in your product key.
-When the installation is complete, launch Norton Internet Security 2010 and manually run LiveUpdate to ensure that the latest program patches are downloaded. When the updates have been installed, reboot computer.
Download Norton 2010 first from the web. Don't install yet. Then remove McAfee using the McAfee Removal tool ( http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507 ) so you don't have anything left. Then install Norton using the downloaded Norton.

Yaso provided complete instructions.
Nice slightly more detailed info Phil D
We all basically said the same thing, with mines the simplified the most and straight to the point.
Follow Yaso if you want to be more secure while doing it.
Sorry guys,
I was just fetching the instructions I had compiled with the help of the Norton forums and McAfee support from another thread and re-writing them...;-))) My father was in exactly the same situation, and these instructions worked for him, thanks to the help I got from this forum ;-D
It looks like we were all typing at about the same time. I forgot to refresh to see if anyone else had posted. Sorry, folks!
All good information though.

If you have an administrator account is it still necessary to right click and run as an administrator when installing NIS 2010? I have not seen this suggestion before. Is it a new requirement?
car825:
Yes - because of the UAC feature in Vista.
Wow! I can’t believe how quickly and thoroughly you provided an answer to my question. Thank you so much. I’ll work on this later today and let you know if I have any further issues.
You’re most welcome, please tell us how it goes
Thank you for the excellent help. I was able to install NIS on all three machines here. We’re up and running smoothly thanks to the good folks here.
Hi leushino, glad everything went smoothly :-)) If you consider your issue solved, please close this thread by choosing the appropriate post as the solution. Thanks
