EMail Error

Hi, I think my PC is infected with some kind of spamming malware. Norton continually pops up with email error messages of 421, 451 or 550 types. It says its failing to send form a wide reange of different addresses and subjects such as viagra and shopping specials. Messages pop up every 2 seconds and the only way to avoid this is by running norton 360 in silent mode.

I'm running Windows 7 and norton 360. Any ideas please. Tried everything I've read on google including Hijack this, Spybot, Malware bytes and a few others.

Thanks

Chris

Hi, thanks for the advice although I'm fairly sure my problem is more severe that that.  The reason I say this is because 2 weeks have past tand the problem is as bad as before.  Any other thoughts please.

Hi chrismike,

Are you seeing any unexplained symptoms with your computer such as severe slowdowns and increased modem activity?  If the spam were coming from your PC you probably would have heard from your ISP by now threatening to shut down your access due to the volume of spam.  So I am still leaning towards address spoofing, expecially if scans are not turning up anything and you have done the things necessary to re-secure your account.  Here are some articles that may be useful to make sure you have done everything you can:

Hi,

Read all of those and carried out as much as I could but the problem persists, the only way to avoid the error messages is to go to silient mode, shame you can only do that for 24 hours at a time.

Thanks

Chris

If it's a case of address spoofing, your choices are to either wait it out, or abandon your current email address for a new one.  There is absolutely nothing you can do if someone is sending out spam from somewhere and sticking your address in the "From" field.

I would suggest to try Norton Power Eraser. Download and run Norton Power Eraser tool :

Go for Rootkit Scan and Restart the computer. Check if it detects any threats and if it does, please provide us the filename and other details. Don't fix any files now, you can fix those after getting confirmation in this thread.
