Error "3039,1"

I am running Windows XP Home Edition 32.  I just spent three hours with Norton Tech Support who unistalled the Norton Antivirus with Antispyware 2009 and reinstalled it.  He could not fix the problem.  Sound familiar.

Mack

Just an update.

I found SONAR Advanced Protection after I saw the scroll bar and scrolled down and there it was big and bold.

Mack (Alias Baldy)

A new update.

I discovered that I could eliminate the 3039.1 problem.

When I clicked on the IGNORE button that popped up when I put the pointer to the right of ON in the Advanced Protection line, I longer had the One Click Support popup activate.  The One Click Support popup had been causing my ERROR:  3039.1 message.

I have been only testing this procedure for about 30 minutes but my Norton icon in the lower right corner is still GREEN.

Mack

I don’t see any ignore button to the right of the advanced protection setting.

Baldy,

I found that button. I had never paid any attention to those before.

That works, it's staying green now but does that mean that advanced protection is working?

Do you think that fixes this problem or just hides it?

Just what is being ignored?

If the advanced protection is set to ignore isn't that the same as if it is turned off?

If turned off isn't that the same as if it were broken and didn't work anyway?

Funny, my reCaptcha image is Episcopal Amazons, lol.

This is from the NIS2009 Help file on Monitoring > Viewing the Protection Status of your Computer:

To view the protection status of your computer

In the main window, next to an item, click the information icon.

Optionally, do any of the following:

To ignore the status of an item that affects your system's overall health evaluation, click Ignore.

To monitor a security item that has been ignored, click Monitor.

So what Baldy did was tell Nis2009 to ignore / stop monitoring the status of the Advanced Protection features.  The features may or may not be running, but they will not be notified of the state of the feature.  The errors or closing of the feature (say, SONAR, for example) would be logged in History but there would be no pop ups and no automatic One Click Support sessions.

Interesting; it seems the product crashes, or at least part of it does, because it is monitoring itself.

Baldy,

Did you ever turn SONAR to OFF and reboot the system to check if the error is in SONAR or in the self-monitoring?

Good evening all.

I connected to Norton Tech Support and told him my solution to the problem.  He said that as long as I get a GREEN indication including the Norton symbol in the lower rightt hand corner of my screen, everything should be working properly.  I have GREEN indications for the SONAR Advanced Protection Computer Setting, the Advanced Protection on the first screen and the Norton symbol in the lower right hand corner of my screen.  It has been running about 6 hours now without a problem.

Mack

Glad to hear that your system is running fine for you.  I was not trying to indicate it was any other way; just what was the meaning of the Monitor / Ignore flags on the main GUI.  Thanks for the information.

I hope this is truly a solution.  I don't have that much confidence in Norton Tech Support at the moment.  My understanding is that the user can supercede the software in a number of instances and produce a totally unwarranted GREEN indicator.  Essentially, what happened is that the software reported there was a problem and you told the software there wasn't and so it quit warning you.

What if I turned off the overheating indicator on my car?  Would that fix the problem of overheating or merely kill the messenger?  Even if the indicator was itself at fault and the warning was incorrect, by turning off the indicator I prevent it from warning me of an overheating problem when there really is one.  I would not be comfortable with that "solution".

Same point I was trying to make.  Thanks.

dbrisendine,

What I did was this.

I turned off Advanced protection in both the main window and under computer/settings then I selected to “ignore” with the “i” button, rebooted and then the Norton icon in the systray remaind green until I shut down the computer many hours later.

Now this morning I turn it on and go online and it is still remaining green, advanced is still off and still on ignore.

But, after the usual span of time here comes the 3039,1 error window again and am still green in the systray and in the Norton main window is says I’m secure with a green check mark…

See my next post titled NIS 2009 + 3039,1 error + Flash since it may or may not be directly related to this.

During the course of this error:

“We have detected that you do not have Flash Player 9 or greater. We will install version 10”

““Click the “Go to support button” and we will install it for you.””

According to the Flash version test:

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html

I have Flash 10.0.22.87.

This Flash based interface Norton uses, which it must automatically download and install every time that this 3039,1 error pops up may be ver. 10 but it must only be doing it in RAM.

This is the only one I find on my comp that belongs to Norton

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player#SharedObjects\RDKUU67C\www-secure.symantec.com\home_homeoffice\support\special\ocs\2.5\flash\ocs.swf\history.sol

and everything between these is just empty of anything except the next folder:

RDKUU67C\www-secure.symantec.com\home_homeoffice\support\special\ocs\2.5\flash<BR />
The history.sol minus the black squares only contains this:

Good morning all.  Just a quick followup.

When I booted my computer this morning One Click Support popup activated. I stopped it.  I noted the following had happened:

The Norton symbol in the lower right hand corner had remained GREEN;  The initial screen in the Computer section, the Advanced Protection had changed to RED, I reset it GREEN;  In the Computer Settings page the SONAR Advanced Protection had changed to RED, I changed it back to GREEN.

I have beeb on the computer now for over an hour and the One Click Support popup has not activated.  Everything has remainded GREEN.   I no longer get the Error message 3039.1.

I am open to any suggestions for a better solution to the 3039.1 Error message problem.

Mack (Alias Baldy since someone was already using the name Mack).

Hi , This issue is Mainly Caused due to Virus and threats !!!!

There is no proper fix for it ;;

Even If you manually remove all the files and Re-Install the 2009 program , There will be no change ;

So Check if you have virus ;

Go to Google , type Symantec in the search and click the main site of symantec , See if it is Re-Directing !

Let me know what happens !!

Thanks MK

Hi mohanakrishnan.

I have run multiple antivirus and malware programs which have found no virus or malware.

Baldy

mohanakrishnan,

Been there, done that with NIS 2009, PCPitstop, TrendMicro Housecall, HijackThis, GMER, SanityCheck, Malwarebytes, Win Patrol Plus, Windows Defender, SDFix, Silent Runners, kitchen sink, lol.

I don’t get any redirects at search engines either.

It’s clean, unless whatever this is is so new or so clandestine that is it yet invisible.

Hi Baldy:

I'd just like to confirm whether you have used Malwarbytes, and whether it was a full scan or quick scan.  If you have the log still available you can post it here using the attachment link below the post button.  If something is identified, we will move you to a separate thread while we help you deal with it.

Not every 3039,1 error is caused by malware, but some are. So it is a good idea to get the possibility out of the way.

I have Flash 10.0.22.87.

I had a similar problem about six months ago.  It turned out that my IE was still loaded during the Flash installation and as a result the installation registered but nonetheless was corrupted.  The fix was to uninstall Flash completely, then reinstall, carefully noting instructions as to when to shut down Internet Explorer.  Hopefully, this will contain something useful for you.

mijcar,

I don't use IE and haven't in many years and never will again if it is my decision.

The last time Flash updated IE wasn't running.

Then I'd suggest you visit secunia and download their award-winning Secunia PSI.  This application scans your computer and finds all out-of-date and vulnerable applications (out of a huge and ever-expanding database).  When it finds an application that needs to be dealt with, it tells you where it is located on your computer and what options you have and has a Wizard that can fix a lot of problems with little or no user interaction.  It can be left in constant monitoring mode or launched and used at user's discretion.

What I have discovered is that Secunia PSI finds apps on my computer that are unfindable any other standard way.  It has found files that cannot be uncovered by Windows Explorer, for example; which I found astounding when it first occurred to me, but which a command level check confirmed.

It is simply a useful tool on any PC and might just help in the present circumstances.  Download and installation are very quick; there are no advertisements; the product is free; and even in active mode uses very little headroom.

P.S.  I have used this for years and have never experienced any kind of conflicts with any other applications, including all Norton products.
