Hello ppoulter.

Uninstall Norton using Norton Removal Tool from this link and then install Norton again.
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

Also, before you install Norton again check so Windows is up-to-date by visiting this link.
http://www.windowsupdate.com

What version of Antivirus do you use? 15.0.X.X or 15.5.X.X?
If you are using 15.0 I would recommend you to download the new installationfile and use it.
Sorry but I could not find the 15.5 installationfile on symantec.com, just contact the support and they can give it to you or someone here maybe have it?

after a lengthy process of chatting with a symantec operator who's computer freezed..i finally figured it out on my own: (please print these instructions-as you will need to restart your computer a couple of times)

1.) Uninstall by clicking on the "install nav09" icon (it will prompt you to uninstall. after uninstall, if it prompts you to restart, do so, then proceed to step 2)

2.) Follow instructions to download symfix_1002,1  put on desktop for now (these instructions are provided with original "error at startup" message)

3.) Follow instructions to download Norton Removal Tool, put on desktop for now

4.) Restart computer

5.) When ready, double click the symfix file, a DOS window will briefly open and close.

6.) Then, run the Norton Removal Tool to remove all remaining components of the nav software.

7.) Restart computer

8.) When ready, click on the "install nav09" icon

9.) Reinstall nav09

10.) Restart computer.

Should start without any error.

it probably seems silly to say this, but you should follow the directions in this order, because i did it the other ways and it did not work.  it has to be done in this order for it to work seamlessly.  or at least this was my experience.  Thanks, and i hope i was able to help someone! ~chan

Please follow the instructions, via this Web Link: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/norton2008.nsf/0/b88173bcf6b06c766525731d004d6dd8?OpenDocument&seg=en&lg=en&ct.

I basically did what you said a few days ago. i reloaded my antivirus software but upgraded to version 9 and now things are working great. Thanks for the help and sorry i didn’t post my success earlier.

the problem with following that link is it doesn't tell you how to really fix the problem.  because i followed that link, downloaded the symfix tool, put it on my desk top, ran it, restarted my computer, same prob occured, so i went to that site again, pressed "what if this doesn't work" and proceeded to download the removal tool, downloaded that, ran that, restarted, same prob occured.

what you need to do BEFORE you do this, which is not explained on that site, is you have to UNINSTALL NORTON FIRST by clicking on the "installation" icon for NAV which will guide you to uninstall the program.  Then you can go to the site that you mentioned and download the symfix tool...while you are at it, go back to that site and click "what if this doesn't work" and download the removal tool.  then run the symfix tool, after that runs (brief), run the removal tool to COMPLETELY UNINSTALL NORTON, because when you uninstalled it the first time IT DOES NOT UNINSTALL COMPLETELY (hence the reason the problem keeps occurring if you don't do these steps and just follow the link like you suggested) on the first go round.  so after you run the removal tool here, you can restart your computer, then REINSTALL Norton, from the "installation" icon on your desktop.  I restarted my computer after that was done, to me sure the problem didnt happen again, and it didnt.

I would still follow the instructions on the Web Page I listed and, if it did not work, click on “What if this does not work?” (it is called something like that).

Well,

I think that people who want to fix the problem, who have tried it the way you have mentioned (as i said earlier), and it did not work for them, should try it the way i suggested because it worked for me (and to save themselves a lot of aggravation when the way that you keep suggesting does not work for them).

Let us let people out in the net choose?  I am only offering a solution that i figured out by trial and tribulation (a whole lot of wasted time, in other words), so that others would not have to go crazy like i was combing the internet for a solution when there wasn't any listed.  Providing the link is not even your solution but Symantecs solution, so we could have found that out without asking you from the pop-up message they give you on how to resolve the issue.

But what is not mentioned is that you must completely remove the software, before you can install it and make it work properly.  and in order to do that, you must first uninstall it, run the symfix tool, then uninstall it again with the norton removal tool (which is a separate tool) that will remove all of the other elements that were left behind from the previous "soft" uninstall.

then, and only then, will you be able to reinstall norton antivirus 9 and have no more glitches when you restart your computer.  I did it.  It works.  So i thought i would post how i did it so that others (looking for a solution and not finding anything but the standard offered symantec solution) can find a way to fix the problem.

Have a great evening...
