While waiting for someone who really knows what they are talking about <g> check out this Symantec document

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/294387.htm

which Google pulled up and which indicates that it can arise from sharing problems. It contains a solution at the end.

<< The same problem appears on two PCs, a desktop and a laptop.  >>

Are they networked together which might explain the problem if you are trying to work over the network?

Anyway see if that helps and if not keep an eye open here for someone more knowledgable in this area.

Thanks huwyngr - but it does not appear to be a sharing problem:

- at the time of running Save&Restore they were networked but did not share any resources - certainly not the USB drive.

- some fiddling around showed something different: after setting up a new Save&Restore task on my laptop - with the same source drive (C:) and the same destination (external USB hard drive, even the same directory)  - it worked flawlessly. I recall this also helped on my desktop some time ago. The bad thing about this "solution": a/ no idea why it worked b/ do I have to set up a new task now every time is use Save&Restore ? c/ is there any true solution to fix this problem.

While I'm glad you've got it working I share your puzzlement.

Hang on for the Cavalry .....

Which settings do you use for the Backup Job that fails, and how does that differ with the ones that work correctly? From the sound of it, the backup job only works correctly once, and then you need to remove it and re-create it. The below support document may not apply, but there may be bad sectors on the disk or too many USB devices plugged in:

Please let me know the answers to the questions, and if this document helps. Thanks!
