I was having a problem getting online so I bought NIS 2010. After I installed it I couldnt get anything to open. My computer could not open files because it said it did not know what to open it up with. Then I couldnt even open up Norton either. Then I got a this error code and my computer has not been the same since HELP PLEASE. I have contacted DELL and NORTON and WINDOWS and no one will Help. Do I need a driver or a download of some sort. I've gone to sites like driver doctor or driverfix but when I go to download it, it shoots me back to the original page that tells me to down load it. Thanx April
Hi haseneiae:
What antivirus software was on your machine before you installed Norton and how was it removed? What errors or difficulties were you having connecting prior to installing Norton? What is your operating system and service pack level? How are you connecting to the net, wired or with a wireless router?
I had program I got at Frys Electronics It failed on me so I went to my control panel and in the add/delete program I deleted it. Then I started to have problems getting online so I deleted my online and reinstalled it(netzero) dial up because nothing else is available in my area(rural). This worked for a few months but I was without security on my computer. About a week and a half ago I went to get online and this popup came on and said that I had dangers to my computer and I neede to get thier computer protection(Windows something). They said it was 80 bucks I said no and kept going thenit came back and said without protection it was to dangerous to keep going and it would not let me back on the internet. Then I couldnt get onto my real player or even use my cd rom or my dvd rom and then It wouldnt let me into my control panel. So I bought NIS 2010 and it installed without any problems. I got online and registered it and it seemed like eveything was ok. The next morning I went to use the computer(Dell Insperion 8300) and al the shortcuts on my desktop had these little arrows on them and each time I clicked on one it would say Cant open file In order to open file windows needs to know what program created it we can look it up on the web or youcan use browse to find one. I’m lost as to what to do. When I went on to norton it said I had an error code and I had to go on Symantec .com to find out what it was but they don’t have an option for that code. Thanx April

You may need to take your computer into a tech near you to be cleaned up. You are likely to have several problems. Most antivirus programs require a special removal tool to clean them out before loading a different antivirus engine. We still don't know what program you had before Norton, but there is likely to be a conflict happening there.
It would also appear that you have a fairly serious malware infection, that is likely to be a fake antivirus program, that is what is actually preventing you from accessing the net and the cd and DVD rom drives. While the malware could be cleaned up, you are still likely to lose some functionality in your machine.
Loading an antivirus product over top of an infection is likely to damage or corrupt it so that it does not work as well or at all. Trying to use the removal tools to get the the other antivirus cleaned out may not work, as the malware will prevent it from running. This is not a quick or easy fix.
April, neither of these error codes look like something that you'd see reported by a Norton product. Where do you see these errors? Also, error 0x80004005 is a generic failure code that could be generated by almost anything and, unfortunately, doesn't provide any information about a root cause.
As indicated in your other thread, your system had problems before installing your Norton product. I suspect that any product installations will continue to exacerbate your problems until the root problem is resolved.
Hi! Haseneiae,
I ran the error codes and it is your computer's way of telling you that the Windows installation is no longer viable. A complete wipe of the hard drive is necessary to reinstall Windows. I had netzero along time ago; they are notorious for dumping malware on unprotected computers. I abandoned that ISP in a hurry. Dell does not offer any support for systems infected by malware and it is not covered by the system warranty either. I agree with Delphinium on this one; take the system to a nearby repair shop to have the unit repaired and have the system fully tested for hardware failures while your there.
