Hi  Tennvito

A bad image error in Vista is created when there's an error in the program code that calls an api function improperly due to file corruption.

Have you uninstalled and tried re-installing Norton??

A virus / Malware infection could have caused a file to come corrupt, have you scanned your PC with a full/deep scan, if Norton won't work try Malwarebytes or Superantispyware.

"WSOCK32.dll" can be modified by certain viruses, as a  way to try and access the net and various programs. WSOCK32.dll is a  library file and is required by windows and is used by applications when performing TCP/IP network communication. If wsock32.dll is unavailable or corrupt , your pc will become unstable as network methods (even if not used) are present in a large number of applications. From Security software, IM, Email and web browsers.

"ccApp.exe" belongs to Symantec (Norton) as far as I know.

I would suggest making sure your system is completely clean of infections then try and re-install Norton

Hi tennvito,

Are you using a retail version of our software (such as Norton AntiVirus or Norton Internet Security)?  I ask because VpTray.exe is part of our enterprise products, Symantec AntiVirus and Symantec Client Security.

If you have a retail product but still have remnants of a previously installed enterprise product, I can help you get it cleaned up.  If you are experiencing problems with a currently installed version of Symantec AntiVirus or Symantec Client Security, I recommend that you contact your college's IT helpdesk or try the appropriate Endpoint Security forum for your product version.

Thanks for the suggestions.  My Norton AV was supplied by college IT dept.  They reinstalled it yesterday and all was fine.  Then yesterday when I started up computer, the same problem was back.  They are telling me to talk to Dell about the problem and see what they recommend.

Yes, I have one of the enterprise products.  College IT dept installed the Nortron AV program about 1 month ago.  IT folks worked on it two days ago and had problem solved then yesterday when I started up computer the same problem was back.  They recommended I call Dell about problem.  Dell supplied laptop and Vista operating system.  Any further thoughts on a solution?

Hi tennvito,

I think one of the possible causes, if I understand correctly, is that you may have Symantec End Point protection installed along side of Norton AntiVirus. The presence of vptray is a clear indication that Symantec AntiVirus, in part or in whole, is still on the system. If Norton is also installed, this is likely what is causing the problem. You might go back to the College IT for confirmation of whether it is Norton or Symantec AV that is installed.

Thanks,

Matt

I’ll confirm which one is installed.  Keep you posted.   Appreciate the help.
