Error No. 8505,129

I keep getting this on my desktop windows XP, 'Security is at risk' and it is not being fixed, I get errot no. 8505,129.  It will  not connect to server.  I'm being told that I'm not connected to the internet when in fact I am.  In Network Proxy settings 'use a proxy server for your  http connections' is ticked, other options are:

Automatic configuration

with options of

'auto detect settings'

'use auto configuration script', which are not ticked.

Then there is:

Authentication:

'I need authentication to connect through my firewall or proxy server' and an option to sign in, which I have done, but still unable to connect to server.  A rogue page has now come up and I think this is what is preventing access to server, but don't know how to get rid of it, I have had this page come up before.

Any help gratefully received. :smileyhappy:

Thank you Rainbow for your reply.  I am on my laptop at the moment, so went onto desktop to pick up the link in your post, but Norton on the desktop looks different. When  I tried to to get into my Norton account, it took me to an IE page which gave me a link to  Network Diagnostics for Windows XP and up came a lot of interesting information which made me wish i was more technically savvy :smileyembarrassed:  Top of the list of info is 'Windows cannot connect to internet using HTTP port (80) HTTPS (443) & FTP port (21) probably caused by firewall settings'.

What does 'The APP cache has been flushed' mean?

Under 'Winset Diagnostic' - A connectivity problem exists with a base winsock provider.

??????

Wish I knew what all that (and more) means. :smileysad:

<<I keep getting this on my desktop windows XP, 'Security is at risk' and it is not being fixed, >>

Could this be telling you that Microsoft is no longer providing updates to deal with problems in XP although providing some for Microsoft Security Essentials?

Does it look as if it is coming from Norton or maybe from Microsoft?

Any chance of posting a screenshot?

I'm confused, do you need a proxy to connect to the internet or not?

You said :

'I need authentication to connect through my firewall or proxy server' and an option to sign in, which I have done, but still unable to connect to server.

If you require a proxy to connect to the internet, your missing the information in the section "'use a proxy server for your  http connections' (you said that box was also selected).

Please open Internet explorer

Go to: Tools > Internet Options

Click the tab "connections" then click the button that says "Lan Settings"

Did Internet explorer go online when you opened it?

Under Lan settings, was the section filled out for proxy server?

Dave

Thanks for all replies, sorry late in getting back - been under the weather :smileysad:.  I disconnected my desk top from the internet as I wasn't going to be able to do anything for  few days, assuming this would prevent anything nasty getting through (??)  I have just followed Dave's queries and in Internet tools in LAN, proxy server is ticked.  Indeed, DO I need to connect to a proxy server?  As far as I know, it has always been this way.  No, it did not automatically connect to the internet.

I have no problem connecting to my ISP, and Norton updates whilst I am on the desk top, but the Security section is never fixed.  When I try to run it manually I get error 5505,129.  At the moment, Norton says error found 3038,104 - checking for a fix, but I don't expect success :-(

Whilst it was running up came a box headed ' Microsoft Visual C ++ Runtime Library '  inside the box is 'C:\ProgramFiles\Browsersafeguard\browsersafeguard.exe'

and the message:

'This application has requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way'

I clicked on 'ok' and currently Norton is  continuing to seek a solution to error 3038,104.

I tried the uninstall tool link and got 'Revocation information for the security certificate for this site is not available', but when I clicked on 'View certificate' it said ' certificate ok'.

Well after trawling the internet trying to find out more about Browsersafeguard.exe I can see that this is probabaly at the root of the problems I am having.  i am in the process of removing it and will report back if this action solves the problem. :smileyfrustrated:

I think this is true as I got a message from microsoft saying pretty much that, but i think browsersafe.exe is at the root of error 8505129.

We need a dancing figure for when we have come to the end of what seemed like a lo-o-ong problem!

Happy to report that removing browsersafe.exe has solved the problem of Norton Security not updating.  Everything is now tucked up safe and sound. :smileyvery-happy:

Strangely browsersafe.exe has been on my desk top since October 2013, but have never been aware of it before.

<< Happy to report that removing browsersafe.exe has solved the problem of Norton Security not updating.  >>

Earlier you referred to browsersafeguard.exe ..... that is what tends to be referred to nowadays as a PUP -- an unwanted nuisance but not necessarily dangerous.

However browsersafe.exe I have seen listed as a dangerous trojan .... Whether it is or not I don't know but hopefully yours was the ...guard

Yes Hugh, sorry I missed the 'guard' bit off the end.  I read quite a lot about browsersafeguard online and the general consensus was to remove it.  It had no right attaching itself to my computer and making out it was there for the good of the computer ( rolls eyes)  darn cheek blocking Norton security update.  :smileymad: So glad it's sorted.

<<   It had no right attaching itself to my computer and making out it was there for the good of the computer >>

That's what PUPs do .... they aren't housebroken!
