Error with BlackChipPoker

Hello, I have been using Norton 360 for a couple years now, but am new to the forum.

I have been running an online poker client called BlackChipPoker for roughly two months now, with N360 turned on. However, today I got this "Error 8504;101" (the last 3 numbers are wrong, it's just an example) and after downloading this Norton tool to fix the problem, it made me remove blackchippoker.exe from my pc for some reason.

As I type this message an Error Found 8504, 100 popped up WTF?!?!

I am on Windows 8. What can I di?

So I ran the Norton Power Sweep or w/e it's called, and it says "No risks found."

Can anyone give me some advice? Is this going to keep happening?

That error message can indicate a file corruption of some kind.

Try clicking on Support - Get Support to run  Autofix to check your Norton installation and fix what it finds.

Be sure you have run LiveUpdate manually a few times, rebooting as necessary, until no updates are available.

Hello, and thank you for response.

I talked with Shiela Baltazar from Norton/Symantec last night and she took control of my pc remotely. She ran the NPE (it was the third time in roughly 75 minutes that the Error 8504 had popped up) and then did the Live Update a couple times. Since she ran the update, Error 8504 has not returned.

However, I still have not reinstalled the Black Chip Poker client. I have the same set up on my older/backup laptop, that I also have N360 on, and I've never seen Norton have problems with the BCP client. In fact it says that it's safe, because I had to run an update yesterday for the poker client.

Some time tomorrow I will reinstall the BCP client on this pc and see what happens. I will also post here to confirm whether or not it's working properly.

Thanks, Mike

Please do update us.

Michael,

Before you reinstall the BCP again have you thought of making an image of your hard drive now that it is OK and then restoring to that is just a matter of minutes!

Windows 8 has drive image making built in -- under Backup and Restore and it's still labeled Windows 7 on Windows 8 !

On WIndows 7 it is located at:

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Backup and Restore

which should come up on your desktop view.

Ideally you should make the image on an external hard drive for safety.

And look also for making Windows 8 Recovery Disk .... but if if you can't boot to Windows itself you can get to image restore from the Startup of Windows.

hello huwyngr, I'm not a techie and don't really know my way around a computer that well. I honestly have no idea what you are saying, sorry. I don't have an external hard drive anyways, so I don't think I would be able to do what you are saying.

I have had this pc for <6 weeks now, do you recommend I at least make my recovery discs before putting BCP back on here? I have yet to make those.

Since buying this pc (and other than the BCP client which is no longer on here) I only have three other pieces of software that I downloaded. 1 is Holdem Manager, a poker tracking software and the other is Carbon Poker, which is another online poker client. The third isn't even software, it's a movie I downloaded legally, through the BetRaiseFoldMovie.com site.

I don't download torrents, movies, pics, music or anything that would put me at risk. I don't watch porn and I don't go to too many different websites, mostly the same ones every day.

Mike,

Sorry if I got carried away .....

Most modern PCs don't come with a set of disks to reinstall Windows etc any more but rather have a hidden partition which you can access from the START / All programs menu (except in Windows 8 you don't have that as you did in Windows 7) and return the machine to factory condition (which loses all the programs you have installed and all the files you have created so don't do it without first thinking)

But this recovery method is part of the PC manufacturer's setup and not of Windows itself and while you can run it from within Windows you can also make a set of recovery DVDs (it may take 3 or 4) which you should definitely do since you often cannot buy a set from the PC maker. Note that usually you can only make one set.

Windows 8 itself however can make a recovery disk that is different and which enables you to start up your computer if Windows is damaged and access certain tools one of which is to reinstall Windows 8 on top of what you have and which does not necessarily destroy your setup of programs and data files.

So my recommendation would be to make the PC makers set and to make the Windows Recovery Disk.

It would probably simplify things if you could tell me the make and model code (not just say Pavillion but also a bunch of letters and numbers that pin it down to a detailed specification and then I can look it up and get the details for you. Meanwhile I'll switch to Windows 8 and find the easy way to make their disk since I've not made one yet myself!

Hugh, thanks again for responding.

The model is HP Pavillion g7-2341dx

17" monitor, 750gb HD, 4 Gig ram

um, I'm going to be out for a few hours, when I come back I will create the recovery discs. I just watched a video from HP on youtube to learn how to do it. Says it could take 6 or more DVD +R, which I do have, or a 16-32GB USB stick, which I don't have.

If I make the Windows Recovery Disk like you suggest, would I have to reboot/reformat my pc or do anything crazy? Or is it just an "ace in the hole" so to speak, in case I ever need it.

Thanks, Mike

Thanks for the details.

I'm in WIndows 8 test bed now but unfortunately I've installed the 8.1 Preview and that has changed some things so I'm having difficulty finding the create recovery disk except onto a thumbdrive. More later.

Make the HP disks first but check back since I'll almost certainly give you a link to the HP website on doing that and they may have their own video.

More later but I'll be off line shortly and maybe for a few hours so don't do anything rash!

lol, I won't do anything rash.

My pc is actually running perfectly since Norton took control of it and ran the updates. That 8504 error was my only problem, now it's gone. Just left with reinstalling BCP.

Talk to you soon.

Excellent--and thanks for getting back to us!

Good luck--and let us know if you see any recurrence (or other problems) after the reinstall.

Obviously we don't want you do anything to compromise the running of a working computer!

But making the HP Recovery Media is a priority.

Here's a link to the Support Home Page for the product with tabbed sections for drivers, troubleshooting, user guides etc.

HP Pavilion g7-2341dx Notebook PC support

Here's a link to the HP User Guide Manual for your model .

And here's the Maintenance and Service Guide  which overlaps on some of the recovery stuff buy is invaluable for it's exploded view of components in case you ever have to change anything after the warranty expires and it gives detailed specifications for different models of the g7.

They are worth downloading as pdf files and keeping it on the computer even if you have a paper version.

In both those manuals you will find full details of exactly how the HP Recovery Manager works including how to access it from the Start Screen so make sure you have a bunch of DVDs (not RW) and do that before trying the poker game again.

I'm having difficulty on pinning down the way to make the Windows 8 Recovery disk other than on a thumbdrive since there option to make a disk seems to have disappeared. More tomorrow I hope.

On that Support page, under Troubleshooting there is an Alert which you should read:

Windows Update 2756872 Hangs at % (Windows 8)

Installing the KB2756872 or KB2770917 using Windows 8 Update can cause the system to hang at 12%, 13%, 14%, 15% preventing the update to install.  Follow these steps to troubleshoot your system and complete the update.

You might run into this since I've heard of people reporting this including here in the Norton Forums I think. Not to do anything unless it happens to you. The procedure they describe is relatively simple!

Let me know if you have any questions and/or how you get on.

OK, so I've finally finished creating the HP Recovery discs. It took more than 2.5 hours, but I'm happy to have it out of the way.

I will wait until tomorrow to reinstall BCP as I did not think the recovery discs would take so long.

It's funny because I planned to do those discs no matter what tonight, and when I opened my computer up, the HP Support Assistant prompted me to create them lol, without me even searching for it on the PC. So that was nice. It took 6 blank DVD +R's for anyone that is interested in knowing.

Hugh if you can not find out how to create the Windows Recovery disc, it is OK. As long as I have an idea of what to do if I have problems I think I'll be good. And you provided plenty of info in your most recent post that I plan to start looking at now.

I plan to report back tomorrow after BCP install, have a good night.

I thought Norton made me uninstall BCP because after I did the "Power Eraser" it said "Remove blackchippoker.exe" but it turns out the software was still on my PC. I went to their site to download it just now, and it said it was already on here. So I uninstalled/reinstalled, and so far there are no problems. Knock on wood.

If anything comes up, I will most definitely report back here.
