Exclusions NOT being excluded

OK.

I have seen this happen many times, on many different computers (XP, Vista, 7 - 32 & 64 bit) with Norton IS 2012 and 2013.

Simply put, I often see folders that are excluded still getting scanned and items being remove/quarantined.

Example -

On my personal system, I have a partition dedicated to video game files. In many cases I might have a lot of game "trainers" that Norton will consider a risk and remove. So, I exclude the entire folder - G:\Game Trainers.

Yet, Norton will still worm it's way in there and remove files from time to time. This only happens during QUICK SCAN when PC is IDLE.

Because of this constant aggravation, I have completely disabled all scans. ANd when I do scan, I have to manually make sure nothing that was excluded got removed!

This is not just me or my system. I run my own private computer and network business. I see this on PCs all over - home users, small businesses. I should have sought help a long time ago but never did.

What gives? Why does NIS scan excluded folders?! How can this be stopped?

Hi superleboski,

I am a bit confused, you state that your situation only occurs during "QUICK SCAN when PC is IDLE".  The confusion starts when you consider the function of a Quick Scan :

Quick Scan is a fast scan of the areas of your computer that the viruses and other security risks often target. Because this scan does not scan your entire computer, it takes less time to run than a Full System Scan.

When the Insight Protection option is turned on, Norton AntiVirus simultaneously performs a traditional Quick Scan and an Insight Network Quick Scan. By default, the Insight Protection option is turned on.

It would seem to me that a folder G:\Game Trainers would not be an "important location".  I am assuming this G:\ is a partition on an internal HDD, in lieu of it being an external USB etc.

Without knowing a lot about the situation, I am wondering if in fact the Insight Protection being turned on is what is causing your situation.  For example, if the "trainer" is listed as a nasty and the Insight Netwrok Quick Scan (in lieu of the regular Quick Scan) is detecting it - that might explain why it is being detected only suring Quick Scan in Idle (as they both run together) and also why the "exclusion" appears to not be functioning.

Perhaps Settings > General > Other Settings > Insight Protection to OFF may stop what you are seeing.

My only other thought was perhaps if you are currently exlcuding Items from Scans, perhaps excluding them under Items to Exclude from Auto-Protect, SONAR and Download Intelligence Dectection may provide the answer for you.

Sorry if this doesn't help - but it's the best I can do with my limited knowledge of this area.

Sorry for delayed response - I was sick with the stomach flu. Just getting back to business now. lol

I see what you are saying Yank (and thanks for trying to help me) but it still does not seem to add up as far as the Insight Protection theory goes. Maybe IU am wrong but Insight is just scanning done with local definitions and those fresh from 'the Cloud'. If a file/folder is excluded, it should still remain excluded regardless.

The G: drive is a partition on a secondary internal HD. The folder on this partition is already excluded under SCANS section and the Auto Protect, Sonar and DID section. So that can't be it.

I would like to think I just have overlooked something easy and simply. Then again that would be embarrassing too considering my IT experience! lol But this problem is not just on my system...other people I know have griped about the same thing and I have seen it on client systems.

At this point, I am more curious than bothered. lol

Sorry to hear about the stomach flu - that can;t bve any fun at all - glad you're better.

Did you by chance try the following?  "Perhaps Settings > General > Other Settings > Insight Protection to OFF may stop what you are seeing"   Even if it is a stupid suggestion in trained eyes (I have no IT experience :smileywink:)

I willingly admit I am self trained, would ike to know more than I do and have learned pretty much by doing silly things in the past and then fought my way out of the silliness.

I really am hoping someone who knows more in this area than I do comes to the rescue - perhaps a Norton employee will drop by.

Once again sorry I was not more help and glad yuo are feeling better.

I will give it a shot and play with it this weekend when I have the down time. But that is a major part of the program and it would be a tremendous shame to have to shut that off. Again, my opinion is that it should not be relevant technically, but if it is, that means there is a bug or glitch that needs to be fixed. An exclusion should be completely protected and excluded. Otherwise, there is no purpose in having the option at all. lol
