Expiration Date for Norton Internet Security

I have 9 days left on my subscription for 2009 NIS.

If I upgrade to 2010 NIS will I loose the 9 days, or will the new expiration date be 374 days?

Thanks in advance for the information,

Jerry

Hello Jerry and welcome!

We have to be careful about some of the terminology.

An Upgrade is when you change from one Norton product to another, like from NAV to NIS.

An Update is when you you acquire the newest version of the same product which Norton offers at no charge. Right now with a valid retail subscription to NIS 2009 you can Update to NIS 2010 at no cost and at any time.

Renewing your subscription will keep all of your current days intact adding the new subscription to them.

Purchasing a New Activation Key (with a new product) and entering it right now will cause you to lose any remaining days.

So, my advice is that if you wish to continue with NIS, you can find many good deals on NIS 2010 both online and in retails stores. Just be sure it is for the "standard" 3 user version, not an OEM or restricted version. This is often less expensive than renewing or upgrading.

Once you have the new product, if you have already Updated to NIS 2010, you do not have to reinstall it, but just enter the New Activation Key one day before your current subscription expires.

I hope I have not confused the issue for you, but wanted to be sure you get the best value for your money.

If you have any more questions, be sure to ask.

Hi Phil,

are you sure, that your information is correct?

I do not agree, as in the last years i always lost the remaing days of my actual licence and the remaining days were only added, after i have contacted the Norton support.

If so as you have described, that would be a huge improvement.

Thanks

Michael

Hi Michael,

Phil is correct. It has been like this at least since the new DRM system started with the 2006 products.

If you lost your days upon renewal it was not really a renewal you got but as Phil describes, a new key (upgrade). "Purchasing a New Activation Key (with a new product) and entering it right now will cause you to lose any remaining days." The price for an upgrade should be the same as for a renewal though. When you activate with a new product key any remaining days from the old key would have to be transferred manually by the support.

As a sidenote, a renewal key has 19 numbers/letters in it while a product key has 25.

Thanks Phil,

I think you are absolutely right. I do have a New Activation Key because I always wait for good rebates from the stores. Symantec doesn't offer much in the way of discounts and since I have 3 user license, they want each machine to renew individually, not cost effective.

I also think I already have 2010 installed, so I just need to provide the New Key.. I will wait until 1 day before the subscription expires...

Thanks for your post...

Jerry

I understand and sympathize with the way you feel about the high cost of buying a subscription renewal from Symantec compared with getting a good deal from a store many weeks. I think the explanation for this is that Symantec, like all manufacturers with retail stores selling their procucts, has to be careful not to undercut their sales outlets and so has to sell pretty well at the highest price "out there" (although they do offer some discounts -- I've been running a Norton 360 30 day trial that runs out in 2 days and they are offering me $10 of the normal price <s>

But I think you are wrong on what you say that I quoted above -- if you buy a single PC product and renew it you get a single PC renewal but if you have a 3 PC (or a 5 PC or 10 PC) product and renew it you get a renewal that matches what you have installed and the price is not N x single price.

If yoou have experienced otherwise using renew on line then you can get in touch with Customer Support and they can soon resolve it -- we have plenty of feedback on they way they sort out mistakes in expirey dates and so on that sometimes occur.

Here's my boilerplate on this in case you ever need it.

To contact customer support Click on this link and work on from there.

You can choose CHAT or Email; phone may have a long wait time and feedback from users tells us that CHAT is by far the best at resolving problems.

Note that that link is to the USA/CAN website so if you are located elsewhere I'm sure you will be able to find the equivalent location on your local Symantec website; some pages have a link at the top right where you can select the country you are located in.

But I agree that when you can buy a 3 PC retail box licitly for $9 - $29 it's well worth the slight inconvenience of waiting until your previous subscription has nearly expired .... even with the frequent nagging!

I have NIS 2009 that I did upgrade online to NIS 2010...on all 3 PC's. I also bought a 3 user NIS2010 package from a B&M store and it was Free after Rebate. I now have 29 days left and know that I can just enter the new key. However, I keep seeing people say to do this when I have a day or 2 left. IF it did expire on a system are they saying that I can then not enter the new key, or are they just suggesting the "1 day period" to be sure I keep being protected?

TIA

I tried to get every minute out of my old subscription - so I put off putting in new Product Key and my NAV shut down when the days remaining was still at 1.

Seemed to shut off at midnight of the 1 day remaining - so do not wait to see a 0.

NAV shut down most services and it looks a little scarry - but it came back immediately after entering the new Key.

So - yes you can reactivate if it runs out - but to be safe - put new code in when the 1 day remaining is showing - so you are sure to get continuous coverage. They give you 366 days and that seems to keep your subsciption date the same next year.

Hello MPSAN

You should enter the new key from the boxed version a day or 2 before your subscription runs out because you will lose any remaining days of your current subscription.  If you do wait till the last day, then your subscription may run out and you won't have the protection at all.

Thanks, ALL:

I will do this when a day or 2 is left. By the end of the year I ALWAYS see a new NIS (if not a bundle of NIS/Systemworks/Ghost) Free after rebate for a 3 user license. I think the last time it was Office Depot.

Hello MPSAN

You probably won't find it bundled this year with System Works since that product has been discontinued.

Yeah, I just got the NIS2010 3 user free after rebate. I do not use Ghost anyway, so I am happy with what I bought...I think I even made $0.01 !
