It will be great if the user get a pop with a warning message or alert to force the user to scan an external device like USB/External Hard disk when it is connected through USB port. This will limit the system being infected from an external device
Excellent idea, this would be a great feature to have since there are cases where systems have became infected by loading from an infected external drive.
It would be better, in my opinion, just to have a prompt asking if oyu want to scan rather than an automatic scan.
Hey there can I ask some questions?
Is it better to autorun the scan and report i'm doing it (so you don't wonder what is happening),
or to autorun the scan and not tell you unless something is found,
or is it better to ask you to run it so you know what is happening from the beginning and can change the settings (don't auto scan)
this was assessed a couple of years ago and dropped due to resource/time limitations but I think it's a good idea.
It is better to autorun the scan and report it what is happening from the beginning. It someone connects an infected external device to the system, and the scan is not performed manually, there is a possibily that the system can be infected. If the scan is performed in the background without user's knowledge, it is better to alert the user if something is found.
1.I think it would be better to ask whether to scan the device or not as many a times you need to plugin the device again
which was previously scanned and hence you know that there is no need to scan it again.
2.Also, sometimes these devices contain huge data and can take lot of time to be scanned which prevents the user
from doing work.
3. Finally if this feature is added in future versions(it should be), then ask the user by giving a small popup at the
bottom right like the warning when a threat is detected ...... not right in the middle of the screen.
NAV/NIS offer an option to “scan removable media” under the “real time protection settings”. Wouldn’t this cover this request?
What is not present today is an option to prompt the user for scanning when removable media is added.
Also, AutoProtect will check any file accessed from your external device. Running a full scan on the external device will do the check earlier though.
