FAcebook end-to-end encryption

Recently Facebook has introduced end-to-end encryption for Messenger.  Since then I have been unable to read the replies to any of the messages I have sent although the recipient can see my initial message.  This is what is displayed, preceded by a lock icon: Messenger upgraded the security of this chat. New messages and calls are secured with end-to-end encryption. Learn more

I have been told that FB links the matched encryption keys of the sender and recipient to their VPNs and because I have Norton's secure VPN active all the time it means that my VPN ID changes frequently and ceases to be synchronised to that of the recipient.

Is there any way round this other than to turn off Norton's secure VPN, which I don't want to do, as it reduces the overall security of my PC.

Oh, is Facebook Messenger a mobile app?

Lets hear from Norton Community

It's all automated - I don't think either sender or recipient have any control over it at all.

And the VPN gives me protection whatever I access on the internet, whereas the encryption is only for FB.

May sender & recipient use the same PIN?

Messenger end-to-end encryption [here] seems like more than VPN offers

Caveat: not Facebook messenger user
