Can you just check your NIS 2008 version number by opening the main control center and then Help and Support > About > Norton Internet Security. The version should be: 15.5.0.23
When NIS was uninstalled was the Norton Removal Tool used?
Yes that is the version, it actually came up when I pointed the cursor at the icon.
NIS was uninstalled using the Norton Removal Tool.
Yes, Phil, I have come across these two during my efforts to install. I have just tried them both again with mixed results.
LU1812 - This one is sitting on my desktop. On both occasions when I tried to install it (both previously and just now) I have received the following message:
RegSvr32: LoadLibrary ("C:\ WINDOWS\system32\mzxom13.dll") failed - The specified module could not be found.
LU1825 - When I previously clicked on the download button for this file (SymKBFix.exe) the link didn't work (tried both Firefox and IE). I then did a Google search for an alternative source but couldn't find a site which allowed a download. Surprise, surprise, I've just tried it again and it worked and it is now installed and I've rebooted my computer.
Sorry, Phil. Just realised there’s a typo. In the RegSvr32 message, the file name should read “msxm13.dll”
In the LU1812 link, did you try the manual steps #2 and #3 to correct the “msxm13.dll” error?
That question jogged my memory. I realised I had downloaded and installed msxml3.dll but hadn't then gone back and run LiveUpdate. I have now re-downloaded that file and installed it and run LiveUpdate from the link which did work. I then went back to the document and under Step 5 clicked on the Norton Internet Security link and downloaded that file.
When I double-clicked on the file to open it, it performed all the pre-scans and started the installation proper, but when it got as far as installing Norton Internet Security itself I received the now familiar messages:
"An installation failure has occurred. Attempting to recover installation failure", followed by
"Gathering error information and sending to Symantec", followed by
"A setup error has occurred which necessitates a reboot. Would you like to reboot now?"
Can you go to temp files (Start>Run ,in the Run dialogue box type %temp% and hit enter key) and open the URL.txt file.
Inside the URL.txt file, you can see a few lines describing the error message (containing 9999,171) .You can see an a value , b value and an e value along with that. Let me know a= ,b = , e= (if any) so that I can help you further.
Try this: How to re-install LiveUpdate.
Correct me if I am wrong, I think it is an installation issue of Norton product now,not a LiveUpdate issue. Get me the information I have requested only if it is an Installation issue
But the LiveUpdate Issue has not been Resolved, as far as I can tell.
I had a similar problem with NIS 2007 a couple of years ago. I had to actually restore my entire system to fix it; but back then I did not have access to the Norton Removal Tool. Since then I have been able to resolve all such issues by uninstalling using control panel, then using a removal tool, then reinstalling.
Hallo Vineeth,
There are several paragraphs of information in this file, but the info re a, b and e (where shown) seem to be the same in each:
a= 1603 b= SymNet.msi e= 28007
Follow the steps in the document given below.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/norton2008.nsf/docid/2007081400030679
Then
Delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\Config and reboot.
Make sure that you are taking a backup of registry before deleting this entry from registry.
Sorry for delay in replying, Vineeth. I really do appreciate everyone's efforts to help me with this problem.
It is the installation of NIS 2008 which is the main problem . After my chat sessions with the Symantec analyser, NIS was installed and seemed to be working OK, but the next day I tried to run Live Update which failed, receiving those two error codes previously mentioned. I was then advised to uninstall and reinstall NIS and that was when I encountered the same problems as for the original installation, in other words, failure.
Symantec has been back to me in the meantime and advise me to download Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0. I had tried this one previously, but re-downloaded it and received the message: "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 has encountered a problem during setup. Setup did not complete correctly".
They referred me to Microsoft Support to find more info, and I have posted a message on their forums, but am still awaiting a reply. So that's as far as I have got, it is now two weeks since this problem started.
Again, sorry for the delay in replying, Floating Red. Live Update remains on hold until the installation of NIS 2008 has been sorted.
Many thanks for your interest
I’m afraid I’ve done that as well, Vineeth
I’ve tried that procedure as well, Mij, still no luck!
pompey33,
Considering the issues you are having with both NIS and MIcrosoft NET Framework and all of the install / unistall, why not try this:
Delete everything in your %temp% folder.
Run Check Disk and select the box to automatically fix errors.
After that, try to reinstall NIS2008.
