Failure to set up extension in browser - repeatedly

Note: Please do not post Personally Identifiable Information like email address, personal phone number, physical home address, product key etc.

Issue abstract:

Detailed description: trying to install the edge browser extension. It failed several times, also tried in Brave browser same result. This was done using the app on a phone as I am a serial user of the software. The first 2 stages of recognition were OK, but at step 3 it failed.

I followed the instructions that came with the error. This was to sign in using my email and password. I eventually managed this. However, when I managed to access the vault it contained only One password - the one I had just used. My app (on phone) still contains 152 passwords.

Online chat support attempted to help but didn’t seem to believe that my phone app did not show the email address I used to set up the vault. After about an hour of back and forth I decided to give up. At present I still have a disparity in the number of password stored between the 2 vaults. The tech support guys thought I might have 2 accounts but I don’t think so.

My one thought is that I was using password manager before I subscribed to Norton 360.

Has anyone come across this problem before ? Is there a solution ?

oh yes - I do have a back up to restore my password to the vault, but this should not be necessary.

Thinking about moving on.

Product & version number: Password manager - latest update installed

OS details: Windows 10.

What is the error message you are seeing?

Does Norton Password Manager on phone use same email address as your Norton account?
So, you can access a vault with one item and a vault with 152 items using the same Norton account credentials and same vault password?

Can you install and setup Norton Password Manager on Windows - Edge browser?

Can you Sign In to your Norton Password Manager vault here (upper right) and access your vault?

Yes I can log in to the password manager now. I had to use the email and password installation route as it did not work via the QR code.

Yes I can sign in via the web site.

The problem was the difference between the number of emails on the web site (1) and the number shown on my mobile device (152).

I have used a back up to restore the passwords on the Web site.

Oh…so, now you’re okay?

Well it is working in Edge. There is still a problem with the difference in the number of logins.

Also nobody explained why the QR code route did not work as this was what I think caused the problem. Have been put off using the software a little. A pity as it has worked well on my mobile device.

Also think problem of adding Norton 360 after using password manager for a while played a part. I remember having to get tech support to merge the 2 apps at the time.

So, you can access a vault with one item and a vault with 152 items using the same Norton account credentials and same vault password?

Where do you see 152 items and where do you see one item?

Is that one item found amongst the 152 items?

I’ve never used QR code route. What is the QR code route?

Yes.

I have updated the vault with only one password using a backup

Do you still have a vault with one item and a vault with 152 items using the same Norton account credentials and same vault password?

Is your vault synching across your devices?

Where do you see 152 items and where do you see one item?

Is that one item found amongst the 152 items?

I’ve never heard QR code route.

AI Mode
To access your Norton Password Manager vault with a QR code, you must first enable the “Passwordless Vault Unlock” feature. This uses the Norton mobile app to approve sign-in requests on your desktop via a push notification, which is a modern, more secure alternative to a QR code.

Before you begin

  • Install the mobile app: Ensure you have the Norton Password Manager app (version 6.2.2 or later) on your iOS or Android device.
  • Install the browser extension: Install the Norton Password Manager browser extension (version 6.3 or later) on your desktop browser.
  • Unlock your vault: Sign in and unlock your vault with your master password on both your mobile app and browser extension.

Set up Passwordless Vault Unlock

  1. On your mobile device:
  • Open the Norton Password Manager app and tap the Menu icon.
  • Go to Settings. Under “Vault Unlock,” tap Enable passwordless vault unlock from this device.
  • Tap Got it to confirm. Your mobile device is now registered.
  1. On your desktop browser:
  • Click the Norton Password Manager extension icon.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts to set up the Passwordless Vault Unlock feature.
  • Select your registered mobile device from the dropdown menu and click Turn on. You can also check the box for “Always perform passwordless vault unlock on browser startup”.
  • Click Done to complete the setup.

Access your vault with a push notification

After setup, you can use the feature to unlock your vault without typing your password:

  1. Exit and relaunch your desktop browser.
  2. A push notification will automatically be sent to your mobile device.
  3. Tap Approve on the notification on your phone.
  4. Your vault will automatically unlock in your desktop browser.

Note: Some results may mention a QR code in relation to setting up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) for your Norton account. This is a different process for account security and does not unlock your password vault directly.

You can only have one mobile device registered at a time to approve a Passwordless Vault Unlock request for your Norton account on a computer. This restriction applies per Norton account and per desktop browser.

If you have multiple mobile devices and wish to use a different one, you must first change the registered device:

  1. Open your browser and launch the Norton Password Manager extension.
  2. Go to the Settings section.
  3. Find Passwordless Vault Unlock and click Edit.
  4. In the next screen, click Change Device.
  5. Select your new mobile device from the list and click Turn On.

This will make your new phone the sole device that can authorize desktop vault unlocks.

QR code is to allow the extension to be installed on edge. The installer suggests you scan the QR code to authorise the installation.

I now have 152 logins on my mobile device

I have no idea if the vault is syncing - as I updated the vault with Only 1 Login both devices now show the same number of logins.

I would like to know why the web site app and the mobile were out of sync in the first place to prevent this from happening again.

and by website app you mean Windows - Edge - Norton Password Manager browser extension?
Help me understand…originally, where was the vault with one item and where was the vault with 152 items?
And you were accessing the vault with one item and the vault with 152 items using the same Norton account and the same vault password?

Lets ask @peterweb why sync was not synching.

Sorry, for me…QR code to allow install on Edge remains an unknown.
What installer? on Windows Edge? on Android Edge?

I feel like I keep having to repeat myself.

One item vault on PC - the Norton website.

152 items on Mobile phone app.

The QR code is to install and access the password manager extension on Microsoft Edge web browser - as stated in previous message.

If you have not used the QR code installer maybe you cannot help ?

Okay –
one item vault on your PC & the Norton website
152 item vault on your mobile phone

And you were accessing your vault with one item and your vault with 152 items using the same Norton account and the same vault password? Interesting scenario…
Thanks

I’ve never used QR code to install Norton Password Manager extension on my PCs browsers nor Norton Password Manager app on my Android devices.

Caveat: Norton Password Manager is not my daily rider. I do not use Passwordless vault unlock. I do not use Norton account 2FA.

Thanks for repeating yourself.

What mobile device and OS version are you using?

I have seen reports of delayed syncing of the vault contents between mobile and PC based vault access.

I am using windows 10 and Android 15.

There was plenty of time for the vaults to sync before I did a restore on the PC.

I just tested on my Samsung A15 on Android 16 with Norton Password Manager, NPM, ver 8.8.5.3772. I created a new login on the phone and was monitoring on my laptop. Within seconds of creating the new login, it appeared on the laptop.

I then went the other way and created a new login on the laptop and it showed up immediately on the phone.

Your delayed sync may have had something to do with Norton’s servers for NPM. And when you checked again, you did have the sync, it might indicate that Norton fixed whatever was going on in the background.

The tech guys I chatted online with made no suggestions other than to see what e-mail address I was logged in with on both devices. I suspect a ‘big’ problem as there was about 4 hours before I uploaded my backup. Not sure it was just a sync issue. Anyway I have decided to try an alternative password manager was not re-assured by the tech support.

Might move away from Norton despite being with them for a while. Sick of continued adverts to add more products to keep my PC ‘clean’. Must say the VPN and anti-virus are still good.

Thank you

Above you mentioned a QR code. Where in this process did you encounter the QR code. I could not find a QR code anywhere when I uninstalled and reinstalled the NPM app on my Android phone.

The QR code appears on the Pc screen when you are installing the browser extension. You are given an option if you already have the app on your phone, if you select this it asks you to scan the QR code - this authorises the installation. Only in my case it did not !

Hence the problems.
